Hi
Can anyone please explain what’s the difference between Yaoi and BL?
And what is Manhua/ Manhwa?
Thanks!
Hey! So a lot of people use BL and yaoi interchangeably but there’s a difference. Yaoi focuses mostly on sex where BL (boys love) focuses more on romance. A story can be both BL and yaoi (with both sexual and romantic plots) or just one or the other.
Manhua is chineese
Manhwa is Korean
Manga is Japanese

Well, BL is the term used to describe the overall genre, while yaoi is a particular part of BL: a 'yaoi' series is one which visually depicts sexual acts: the opposite of shounen ai, which mostly shows the fluffy side of things/or purely a story between 2 boys (usually romantically involved with each other) who don't explore sex too much, at least not on screen. And as I mentioned before, BL is the whole genre by itself: that's why most people usually ask for 'BL recs', meaning they don't mind if it's shounen ai or yaoi.
Manhwa is Korean, and Manhua is Chinese.
Hope to have helped (●'◡'●)ノ
BL (Boys Love) is the correct term to use. Yaoi is just a term that the west uses. What the west think yaoi means is BL with sex in it. Shounen-ai is BL with just romance, no sex (is what the west say it means). (That is why you see those tags in english websites like this one) No one in Japan or Korea uses yaoi, when it comes to their works. When they put the genre for romance between two men they put BL. If you go to a bookstore you will see in the cover, or in the spine of the book, BL, not yaoi.
Yay!!
