there are ppl saying it’s rape and ppl saying it’s not. okay. it IS rape for the people saying it isn’t.
rape, by definition, is penetration of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without consent.
but, on the other hand, i understand why some people don’t feel like it’s rape. they’re judging by the vibes the situation gave off. one side of the argument is a anti-rape, doesn’t matter the intent type, and the other side is trying to look at the emotions of both Richard and Courtney. and i also think a lot of the problems the anti-rape side stems from the concern that other readers are desensitized to the real life implications of this chapter because of the fact that the story is fiction. no matter if you continue to read it or not, Richard was wrong in not stopping. it was clearly hurting her and even if she wasn’t in pain, he has a obligation to stop when she asks and vice versa.
this is how i see it…it was definitely a case of assault, regardless of his intention. doesn’t matter the specifics of what she meant by stop, he should’ve stopped when she yelled the first time. however, it’s also realistic to say, “hey, this is their first time. he doesn’t know what he’s doing.” sure, we can say that. at the same time, he still should be held accountable for his actions. it’s wtv to say he made a mistake, but it’s a fine line of just doing that and EXCUSING what he did. his actions were violent.
there’s no excuse, but there can be room for understanding and learning. he’ll be punished, they’ll move on, and they’ll continue the sex. it was a moment of sexual violence that won’t be seen again as they gain more experience together. but if we’re all being honest, though, this whole sexual interaction has been sketchy without the proper safeguards to dabble into BDSM. no safe words, no lube, and he wouldn’t even let her test the toy on herself to not hurt him for Christ’s sake.
if you can’t stomach an awkward, sketchy first time, then this isn’t for you. skip these scenes or stop reading or do wtv makes you comfortable. you know what you hate and aren’t able to tolerate. to say that this chapter was sudden violence is not true. this whole sex scene has been done incorrectly from the start.
