I'm pretty sure that he himself knows what the townspeople think so a good "hey guys, your daughters aren't actually being eaten or anything bad..."
So for now, 1-2star will do. Like, think about the elderlies who probably couldn't enjoy their limited time because of guilt, sadness and even loneliness...
