You guys are being so misleading when it comes to the main couples relationship. “They aren't toxic”, um, they very much kinda are, the whole relationship is literally built around fear, possessiveness, and selfishness. At the beginning they both used each other for their own needs with isn't necessarily bad or uncommon in bl’s I admit. But throughout the hole thing threats are used as a way for they're relationship to develop which is a no-no. Vasly (I can't remember his name) was constantly using yunos fear as a way to get him to do things. Even at the end he never changes and he never really takes what yuno wants into consideration(he literally tries killing his friend with no care), I understand that he is a mafia boss and all but this is still pretty toxic behavior. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the story and the couple and I also like that he would do anything for you but we still all have to admit that at the end of the day they are a bit toxic. Also, I apologize if you disagree with me.

Basically, they were childhood friends and the dude with glasses was always doing risky things and telling the other guy not to worry, to trust him. Before they were about to flee to China to be more free, they were caught and the glasses guy was sent to prison, he sent a letter to his lover, telling him that he should go to China and wait for him, that he was going to come. In the end he never did, and the guy with no glasses was waiting for him until he was old. I'm guessing he was killed, like you know on the first page, it showed them beheaded heads?

Nico, Cecilia, and Grey grew up in the same orphanage. And there's the whole love triangle thing where cecilia likes grey and nico likes cecilia. jealousy and the lot. ya know?
Anyways, they all go to a military school, so they can go to school for free since they wouldn't have been able to go otherwise. They have "aura" instead of "mana" in that life. Grey has barely any and is a swordsman genius. Cecilia has a crap ton of power, but can't control it. Nico is kinda average i guess, but still strong. So they each get different mentors and train for a while separately.
Turns out cecilia is being trained by the govt and they just want to use her for her power and are planning on kidnapping or marrying her off or some shit. Nico finds out and tells Grey. Grey and Cecilia are going to enter a competition to become the next crown prince/princess. Cecilia acts like she hates him/tries to kill him. Grey matches her skill level. He tries talking to her abt her situation. They basically reenact the Rin/Kakashi scene and she forces Grey to stab her and kill her. She and Gray talk while shes dying. Basically tells him that she wanted to die and is happy that it was him. Nico witnesses her death but doesn't hear their conversation so he thinks that Grey just killed her to get the crown. Nico is very salty. He is reincarnated as Elijah and wants to make Arthur suffer by taking away a person important to him. he uses Tess as a vessel for Cecilia's reincarnated consciousness.
So her death and Nico's reason for vengeance against Grey is just a happy misunderstanding. It's pretty much exactly like the Obito/Kakashi situation...

Action/adventure oriented stories usually paste in romance. i agree romance doesn't get the attention it deserves in these types of stories making it rather lackluster.
