I agreed with you, there are better ways to do that.

And the bullying didn't really involve anything too bad. No scribbling mean stuff, no pushing around, no tripping, no gathering other people to make fun of the person and other things like that. It was mostly pestering, really.

Making people bottle up even more frustration is NEVER a good answer to that.

Well, it's true that is not the kind of behaviour that makes people gain murderous intents. But it is the kind of behaviour that makes it almost acceptable to stab someone.
"Good intentions", "it wasn't too bad": excuses. Doing something that to annoy other people just for that reason is weak and should not be condemned. It could feel like bullying to people.

First of all. "good intentions", "it wasn't too bad"- these aren't excuses. These are statements that help differentiate one case from another and avoid oversimplification. Of course, it's better to not just mess with people but, seriously? "Almost acceptable to stab someone"? This is one person on one person. The one being teased can express his feelings and anger verbally. Clamming up and then doing something grave when he can't take it anymore would be a wrong decision on his part.

And by the way, to the comment above, even though he did retort once, the event that really do the MC good was the one in the principals office so I didn't really get the message that the bullying was good. Just not evil. (I personally think it wasn't a very smart idea.)

The dad is pretty darn awful too, though. Never even trying to figure out why his son doesn't like his desires for a young schoolgirl.
