He didn't know that killing her caused the time loop to occur, he thought that she was causing it before she died. It was only when she died in front of him when she took the arrow for him that he realized that her death was the cause. That's why in the current loop, he prevented her death from the arrow.
The mix-up is easy to make though, I only know for sure rn bc I just reread the story lol

this is a major spoiler for chapter 61
for those uninterested, i recommend stopping here
basically horse face finally got his cast off and was supposed to get rehabilitation services from his new physical therapist (the one we met in the previous chapters). however, since he found dan he shows up to his workplace, the hospital, and demands treatment from doc dan (he goes to the hospital director for this). the director then summons doc dan into his office and yadayadayada, dan is appointed as horse faces personal physical therapist. doc dan however tries to talk some sense into him by telling him that he can’t keep doing this since this is his workplace and he’s not interested in cooperating with him (which obviously doesn’t work, who are we kidding). dan then tries getting out of his way, basically ignoring him, even if it’s work related, which of course pisses our ml off. to end the chapter off, we see how shit face has apparently bought the house next door to doc dan.
sorry if this was quite lengthy but it basically summons up the whole chapter. a whole shit fest if you ask me but what else is new lmao
