Just needed to get this out as I've hit a wall of frustration- apologies for the rant lol!
When I'm looking to get my jollies, I find myself usually gravitating towards yaoi (or the occasional yuri) but decided to shake it up over the last several days and explore the world of shoujo sex (aka the smut tag). Needless to say, I hated. Ignoring the overuse of rape, which is heavily featured in yaoi as well, there are just tons of reasons why shoujo smut pisses me off.
1. The main lead is pretty much always, always an asshole. In the rare cases he isn't, he will have an asshole friend who tries to rape the female MC. Always
2. There's never really any conflict resolution. Maybe it's just me but...does anyone else feel like the guy just gets away with whatever? It's like the girls are so dick-dizzy they forget how to confront them. Or it's a shallow "sorry" without addressing the root of the issue: possessiveness, paranoia, plain old douchebaggery...
3. Unnecessary drama. Well this is pretty typical in all shoujo but I find it's heightened in smut because now we have rape! So stupid scenes like a jealous girl group surrounding the MC and telling her how much her boyfriend dislikes her (cuz, ya know, they're bffs with the guy and all) now turns into girl being kidnapped and (almost) raped by a random group of guys! And every minor guy who blushes when he brushes hands with the MC becomes a brutal horndog whose need to hump her outweighs all rational thought. Seriously, it's like all the characters are on drugs- their reactions are so extreme!
4. And this is really just a preference thing but the art just isn't as detailed and it ends up feeling like a ton of buildup for nothing!
Once again, super sorry for the rant. I was originally going to write only a few lines, but apparently I felt more strongly about this than I thought lol. To anyone who managed to read this far- cookies, cookies, everywhere. Or would candy canes be more holiday appropriate? Anywhoo...I'd love to hear y'all's thoughts on it and/or you've come across any smut that really exceeded your expectations, either good or bad (I'm up for a laugh). (⌒▽⌒)
I feel ya. I tried to read those, but the girls were so unnecessarily weak and the males were so arrogant that I immediately stopped. So much drama too... I know that's typical for a shojou, but god dang...
Agreed. For some reason, most shoujo smut I've read are all the same basic plot .. :/ Kinda like how 'this girl is being forced to do such and such' or eveything feels like rape. (Most of the reason that I found myself liking bl more is because of the common theme in shoujo smut) That's just my opinion, though. Not pointing fingers. ( ̄∇ ̄")
LOL LOL LOL LOL
Because of that, I Love Yaoi so much, more.. more than shoujosei smut. they have no feeling at all when have sex. always always always forcefull. hatefullll. it's really really really different when uke say "no no, don't... " to seme. my heart felt content. but when some shoujosei smut MC say "no no, don't.." I just scream.. bitch, if you don't want it, just kick him. slap him. SCREAM!!
LOL
oh, I never said that all of them had bad story yadda yadda, I find some good manga actually, like: http://www.mangago.zone/read-manga/koi_wo_suru_no_ga_shigoto_desu/
I know quite a few of us in the US/UK had issues with the site being down completely earlier (did any of y'all from anywhere else have that?). While waiting for the site to come back online, I decided to procrastinate on homework by checking out other manga readers and realized I don't know any that are as good as or comparable to mangago and work for me. So I want to know- what are your favorite manga readers? *Outside of the scanlators' readers, of course, which I prefer if I'm looking for something specific.
I'll list a few I tried and why/how they didn't work out in case you guys are interested.
1. Mangahere: quality wise, I'd say this is my favorite, even better than mangago. But I have severe lagging issues with it which is why I even started using mangago in the first place.
2. Mangareader: I don't like anything about it, tbh. It has a pretty limited collection, the search bar is really annoying to use.
3. Mangafox: Ties with mangago for user features and sense of community (the forum feature also makes for great discussion) but I find that most of the manga on there are unreadable, yet they keep posting updates.
4. Manga.animea.net: Pretty much the one I go to when mangago isn't at 100% since the pages are pretty much guaranteed to load and the collection of manga is decent. But...I'm not fond of anything else, really. The homepage design is plain (you have to open the manga page to see a summary for example), and too text heavy. Just the sort of place you go to when you know exactly what chapter of what manga you want to read, and don't wanna get bogged down by people's comments or anything. But not too good for discovering new manga or anything.
Sorry for the long post, but I was just surprised to see that I had so few viable options with these sites I've gotten to know over the last 7/8 years. Any readers you like to go to? (=・ω・=)
it wasalso dow for me too in france, i thought my computer had problem bc when i turn it on afterbien turn off (ran out of battery) mangago was down
Yeah it got too slow for me too! And only a few months after they put in tsukkomis which was a bummer. And the comments just disappeared for me entirely. I do occasionally go there to read a particularly funny chapter/manga just to get a few good laughs. I never had an issue with popups, funny enough, maybe I left before it became an issue?
first click on anything on a newly loaded page- popup
every 10 or so pages of a manga - popup
plus the ads now are some high-res clip or smt, it crashes my poor-ass old manga reading PC like nothing else ( ̄∇ ̄")
the clip ads are new (a month or so) and they really DO cause my PC to crash, it's impossible to even open mangahere ( i have to use "the gaming" PC to read on mangahere :'D )
I used to hop around a bit more, so I got used to using mangaupdates.com for tracking my manga so I can access the same info regardless of reading site. But I realized from yesterday that not all readers are the same- even disregarding user interface (lists, albums, all the features that are so awesome), mangago seems to have the best reader site. I don't have issues with lags, popups, it has a huge library despite being one of the newer ones, and the people on here are active enough in commenting that its really easy to find new manga to read. Guess I was just wondering if any other site was comparable but it seems like mangago is the cream of the crop ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭
I'm looking for a shoujo I'd started reading several months ago- it was pretty new at the time so I can't imagine it's more than 1/2 years old now.
It was about a high school girl who was moving to a boarding house (may have moved to new city, I can't really remember) and saw/fell in love at first sight with one of her housemates who was this super cute bishie. The next morning, however, she's leaving when she sees him, wearing a plain outfit (I think it was jersey pants and a white t-shirt or something similar) and carrying a grade school backpack. That's when she realizes he's still in elementary school and the first chapter ends.
Any help would be much appreciated! m(_ _)m
Hi! I'm looking for a change of pace and wonder if any of you have non-yaoi recommendations. I don't mind shoujo so long as the characters aren't extremely idiotic and unable to calmly talk away misunderstandings, or anything that drags on way too long/heavily features assault/rape and the like (basically, no Shinjo Mayu). Preferably something with a bit of action and/or comedy?

And even tho it's not as big as the shoujo one i also have a shounen list (it has most of the popular ones and a few more tho, so it's not that much)
Hope it helps and enjoy~
Hey y'all! Haven't done one of these in a while and I found myself wondering this recently so I figured I'd get some feedback. Ready? Here goes! (click the + button)
So since this is a site heavily featuring yaoi, I'm sure you've read your fair share, or at least have a few memories you can fall back on ⁄(⁄ ⁄·⁄ω⁄·⁄ ⁄)⁄ . That said, are there any recurring tropes/themes that you're tired of seeing?
Ex: for me, it's the uke crying during sex thing. I don't mind so much that a lot of yaoi do it (cuz everybody can be a little emotional once in a while). What annoys me is longer series like Katekyo! and/or Kokoro where the uke cries every. single. time. Like, damn, aren't you used to it by now? Does anyone actually cry that much? It just seems strange is all. ┑( ̄Д ̄)┍
How about you guys?
What annoys me is ukes who looks too much like grils, plzz we read yaoi for a manxman !!! I'm tired to see ukes fighting back like pussy (╯°Д °)╯╧╧! And what makes me upset even more is the rape thing : seems authors think " gosh I dunno how to developp the relationship between them! Oh then a little rape should do " XD
Wow I feel better now (▰˘◡˘▰)
I'm only annoyed if the plot is too cheesy and boring and the characters are too stupid. By cheesy I mean when the characters fall too easly in love or say I love you too fast and so on... And it's also annoying when the ukes are crybabies and aren't able to protect themselves ugh and just like Maniac said, I hate it when the guys look TOO much like girls
PS Of course Rintarou from Katekyo and Jun from Kokoro cry every single time they have sex. Afterall, their semes like to tease them and see them crying in pleasure (so they cry from the pleasure, not because they're not used to it)
Hey guys!
In an effort to avoid studying for finals, here's the 3rd installment of this little series. I'm taking a more targeted approach here and aiming it at people who read/have read shoujo manga.
What is/are your least favorite trope(s) of shoujo manga?
I have quite a laundry list of things that piss me off but I'll try to succinctly name a few:
1. That gang of mob character bullies that pops up whenever there's a popular guy, along with the phrases "___ is everyone's" and "we've all agreed to share him for his sake". Uh...no, he's not and no, you haven't.
2. Character X takes off her glasses and goes from hideous to smokin hot. We all know life doesn't work like that. If you want to be convincing, you better do more than take off some transparent lenses.
3. Stockholm Syndrome. This may be my least favorite trope- as in every time it happens I stop reading and (╯°Д °)╯╧╧. It's one thing if the love interest is a slight asshole but it's another when you have your character falling for psychopaths left and right. An MC with a short term memory longer than that of a goldfish won't fall in love with the guy who tried to rape her in chapter 3 simply because he shelters a kitten from the rain in chapter 4.
There are millions more but I'll stop ranting here lol. What about y'all?
So pleased with all the responses on my first discussion that I just have to throw out a new one. So...in an effort to procrastinate on studying for my Thursday morning orgo exam, here's question 2:
What is one manga that you think positively shaped you- whether it's your thoughts/actions towards a particular topic or just your view on life in general?
For me it would be peach girl; I read it years and years ago (back when I was a budding preteen lol) and I thought it helped me keep an eye out for fake friends who use you to elevate themselves, one of whom was very close to me at the time. So the manga opened my eyes to reality and convinced me to not waste my time on people who only make me feel bad- a lesson that I carry with me always. How about you guys?
There's two manga that really affect my way of viewing life and both are really similar
http://www.mangago.zone/read-manga/confidential_confessions/ : it's different stories about real life issues girls go trough (suicide, rape, drug abuse, etc) and it's really effective, specially the sexual harrassment story it really openned my mind.
and
http://www.mangago.zone/read-manga/tokyo_babylon/ : Under a love/hate, hunter/pray boys love story, it's a criticism of todays modern society and talk about a lot of subject (adultery, suicide, organ donation, rape, old people abuse, child abuse, revenge, murder, etc) I also really like Hokuto, she's an idol, literally, she have the same way of thinking and I specially liked the story when she save this illegal girl from arrestation.
Both of these manga have probably set my mind into my study program: social work!
well, there is a manga that influenced my way of thinking:
http://www.mangago.zone/read-manga/kanata_kara/
it`s a fantasy shoujo fantasy a girl who fell into another world. i liked her big heart, how she finds her way in this foreign world, her attitude to make the best she possibly can of everything and how she convinced the male mc that our decisions define who we are and not our skills. and i was impressed by a believe she found at the end.
reading this manga made me thankful for what i have and value even small things that seemed meaningless before. it made my negative way of thinking more positive^^
I like your question. I wish I was around for the first one. The manga that has impacted me the most is Beck, a story about an average guy, his encounter with a rough-and-tumble guitarist, and his subsequent discovery of the world of Rock n' Roll. He learns guitar and joins the guitarist's band, trying to climb the upward slope to success. I used to listen to pop songs, not because I liked them, but because I wanted to be one of the cool kids. This was in middle school. I used to act really condescending around my Dad because he would listen to Jazz and old Rock n' Roll, and I'd know the latest trends. But as a little kid my Dad's songs were my favorite songs. I realized I felt pretty empty whenever I listened to pop. I'm a singer, so my singing took a major turn as well. I guess among the many lessons I learned "Don't be a trend, follow your heart" is what shaped me the most, and now I live by it.
There are many mangas that I have found very impacting, but this wins by far for me :
http://www.mangago.zone/read-manga/watashitachi_no_shiawase_na_jikan/
Its the story of two people trapped in despair that, brought together by circumstance, come to long for the "tomorrow" they had given up on.
It is deeply touching, and I have never cried as much with a manga before. But as I dried my tears and looked around, I realized how lucky I was, how much I had, how thankful I should be for the smallest things. I had never thought about life the way it was presented in the story. Even now, when I am sad or depressed or whatever, sometimes I'll think back to this story. Its weird how a tragedy can cheer me up :P
For me it's Vassalord.
Putting aside how awesome and hot a shounen-ai with a story like that is, I needed time to understand Rayflo's monologue at the end when he said he won't mind if the demon takes away his family, friends or beloved, because from that day forth he won't have regrets. I learnt you have to treasure what and who you love while they're still here, because you never know...And when a bad day comes, you'll be happy to know you loved them throughly, so you won't have regrets, though you'll miss them.
If you haven't yet, you should read that manga! It's too good!!
Ikr thank god for manga too. I have to mention Princess Jellyfish (Kuragehime) which has tremendously changed my outlook on life. I haven't finished it yet, but it's definitely a must-read.
Now I love how useful the homepage is for people looking for mangas and whatnot but I feel like the potential for community interaction is really interesting as well. So in that vein, I'm going to post the first in a series of discussion questions I'll ask every so often (read: whenever I remember).
Question:
What was your first manga? Note: you can separate them by genre/ medium etc if multiple comics left a lasting memory
Ex: I don't remember the first printed manga I read but the first one I read online was 100% perfect girl that I stumbled across one day in '07 and searched for for many years until I found it again in '11. How about you guys?
My 1st ever manga was "No Bra". It's an echi, romance, shounen manga. I just started using net at that time. And i didn't know anything about different genres or their meaning. Honestly i don't like that manga now. Echi is 1 of my most disliked genres. However i am thankful to it. Because it brought me the great pleasure of reading manga for the 1st time.
Well, I remembered that I saw a Shoujo manga magazine on a rack in a video store (ahh, the old days) I bought it and the first thing I read was Vampire Knight. But I would have to say, I got into anime first, so without anime, I would have been missing on such great manga!! >u<
For online, it was Gravitation and thus my road to being a fujoshi began~
Definitely Naruto, which I first read in 2001. I feel kinda lost and sad after it finished ╥﹏╥. However I felt happy though cause I get to know the ending while I'm still alive (๑•ㅂ•)و✧. Haikyuu!! is my 1st sport genre, and I love it so much eventhough in real life, I never really enjoy sport ( ̄∇ ̄"). 1st shounen ai manga I come across is Super Lovers and and Warui Series is my 1st yaoi manga, and I really love the Mujihi Na _____ series (。‿。).
The first manga i read was Death Note, one of my friends got it for me as a birthday gift because I love anime and it was right around when the anime ended(I think it was '08), so I read the whole series, then watched the anime. I still really treasure this gift.
My first online manga was Absolute Boyfriend, because the store near me didn't have all the volumes and I really wanted to finish it. Looking back now I wouldn't say it's my favorite shoujo manga, but It's still different from most stories and a good read. I still really like it.
Great idea! Specially for people like me who have no 3D people to discuss with.
I watched anime though not much, and one day I saw that there was a printed version in the library...it was a shojo manga, don't remember which one though. So I read a few mangas after that, all shojos, for a while.
Eventually I grew a little bored since I could tell very quickly what was going to happen, and some MC reacted in a way that was too exaggerated for my tastes...
I stopped for a while, and I don't know why or how, I found my self back in manga world... then I discovered BL, and I wish I could remember how and with which one but I don't. Something super light, probably just bromance, but it lit a fire in me. And now here I am :D
That would be Hana Yori Dango. I have always watched anime (as many other fans like myself), however I never was interested in mangas. I thought that it could never be as interesting as novels. However, I changed my mind when I grabbed Hana Yori Dango and since then mangas have been a part of my readings.
The first novel I've read was "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" by Victor Hugo. I was 11 or 12, and it didn't have to do anything with the Disney movie version of it. That book was a landmark which marked a turning point in my life because reading is really a wonderful thing. Oh well, no need to expand more. Thank you for picking this interesting topic.
My very first manga was Guru Guru Pon-chan. xD My cousin had one when we were younger and I read it first from her. A couple of years later, as I was scanning for good novels *slash* peeking on the manga section, it reappeared. A different volume tho. To my surprise, it cost only less than 100 pesos. (From the PH btw.) I was like, no way?? heck yeah!!! And then I dashed off to the cashier. It was all pure and innocent in those days. Still good with other genres but I forgot how I ended in the fujoshi army. Oh well.. ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭ lol
My first anime was Hunter x Hunter. My friend who was big fan of Naruto had persuaded me to watch Naruto but I didn't wanted to after 1 episode so he downloaded Hxhunterxhunter so we could watch sth together. N I loved it!! It introduced me to world of anime! My first manga was Kaichouwa maid sama. At first I was reluctant coz I dnt like comics but I loved that anime so much that I thought to try out manga. I was surprised to find out it was as good as novels. Then I found yaoi n now life is full of bliss ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭ヾ(☆▽☆) Sekaiichi hatsukoi is the best
Hmm first anime is between samurai x and dragon ball I have to brothers they pratical forced me for dragon ball but got hook on samurai x ( oh and p.s. I'm a girl :P ) hmm first manga don't remember :(
My first manga...I can't remember if it was Naruto or Lovely Complex. When I read one of them I was 11, so it's somehow hard to remember. But my first yaoi manga was Kokoro by Kanda Neko.
My first anime was Shaman King. I still love it! I was watching it when I was 5 and at that time I couldn't separate reality from fiction, so then I was pround to say my first crush was Asakura Yoh...This sounds so embarrassing now! Σ( ̄□ ̄||)
For any of y'all who consider the New Year special, if you did (or could) christen 2016 with a manga of your choice, what would it be and why?
For me, I'm glad I re-read Diamond Life first this year, even if I didn't intend to, because it really sends a message that hard work can overcome even the most difficult obstacles. And, as this year is looking to be quite a doozie for me with finishing grad school/job searching/potentially moving across the country, I really need a self-confidence boost right now!
Well,It's not really a manga but an anime movie.(≧∀≦)
It's called 5 mm per second.
I love this one.(๑•ㅂ•)و✧
For me,everyday is a new opportunity to better yourself and to always to cherish the people that loves and cares for you. If not a person, then maybe your pet cat or dog.
yknow...
I remember all the times that I cried.I laughed.I got very angry.I got very jealous.I envied.I loved.I got heartbroken.I got fat (no kidding!) in the last 20 years of my life.
I learned quite a few things.(▰˘◡˘▰)
I think personally, it is a waste of energy to try and change the past but instead I focus to move forward. For tomorrow. For my future.
Needless to say, learn from the mistakes.Do not give up.If you feel alone, don't.There's like a whole world waiting for us out there. To make our mark.
...
Move on from all the hatred and pain.
And...that's a wrap!
Thanks for sharing and Have a healthy and glorious 2016
