People are reading this story “wrong”.
They think this story is meant to be romantic and that Zhenya is meant to have redeeming qualities. This leads to them trying to search for redeeming qualities in him, which they will never find. The reason for that is that Zhenya’s character isn’t meant to be redeemed.
I have no impression of the author trying to romanticize or idealize this type of relationship at all. The author simply wants to tell a story with their relation and actions. This however, is something many people have a hard time understanding. Instead they see the author as someone who tries to idealize, glorify and portray love this way; which is not what the author is doing.
The author is simply showing their relation and what happened because of this relation.
