So cakes and other normal people in the cakeverse have tasted everything they ate from birth.
But these poor forks don't taste at all Or maybe it's super bland from the day they were born.
They also don't get pleased with any kind of smell but once they find the cakes basically smell them the forks jump on them.
Basically this is it.
It says in Ch 1 that they lose their taste as they grow so I assume they are craving the ability to taste again after such a long while. Once they find their "cakes" it's like a light at the end of a tunnel and they've GOT to have a taste! But hey...I'd kill for a piece of Tiramisu right now for sure ლ(´ڡ`ლ)
