There might have been the slither of hesitation in actually taking the call (which resulted in him actually not taking the call) - maybe because he didn't know what to say. I don't think he did it because of the reason Wackos thinking of. I think he just was convinced he wouldn't survive and didn't know if taking the call just to hear him pass would be fair.
