The translation was indeed rough, but I understood every bit of it. Judith came to be Judith. She had a beautiful older sister everyone wanted. With her sister being so beautiful and getting all the attention, Judith was insecure about her looks, but her older sister was gentle and kind and she loved her very much. She loved her warm little home with her sister and loving mother though they weren't wealthy.
Coming home one day Judith witnesses her gambling addict of a father dressing her sister up in a dress that he purchased frivolously with money they didn't have all so he could forcefully send her to a party at a nobleman's home so her beauty could grab wealthy men's attention and her possible marriage to them would raise their family out of poverty.
Judith is pissed. How dare him to try and sell his daughter out in hopes of her marrying into money so he can spend it when it was his gambling habits that put them in the financial stresses they were already in. Judith tells her sister forget their half-assed father and to just do what she wants. Her sister tells Judith she will go to the party, and Judith was about to get mad again because she thinks her sister is doing it for their father. However her older sister states that she just wants to go for the experience, as with their status and finances there may not be another chance. She makes a comment that she hopes she finds a handsome guy at the party.
The sister comes back from the party and gushes that she had fun and that she indeed met a handsome man. That they spent time together, and how she thinks Judith should meet him and they should hang out next time. Judith is happy for her sister, until she realizes her sister is pregnant and the man her sister gushed about, who was suppose to come around never did show his face.
So her sister has her baby (Luca), and Judith is upset to see that all the people that use to favor her sister for her beauty now treat her like a harlot and whore for having a child out of wedlock. Even her father was who was shitty already became verbally abusive, that is until his shitty personality and gambling ways ended with him being dead in a ditch. Judith however thought that was for the best, honestly she was sure her mother and sister thought the same too. That with her father gone they maybe able to finally find a little peace. That is until the year Luca turned 5 years old and an epidemic hit their village.
