ash rubbed me the wrong way since the beginning, but a lot of people were saying he's a green flag so i thought it was just me...

Omg fr. Like the time Lyle visited Ash at work. For Ash to be like “I’ll talk to him! Maybe we’ll be something!” but then saying “We really are nothing” straight to Lyle’s face is aggravating.
I know that situation was weirdly never adressed again even tho it should've been, but how was that a red flag?? It was a problem with miscommunication and Ash admitted (albeit to himself and not to Lyle) that he fucked up by making Lyle upset that day
You’re right. Ash exhibits several abusive and/or manipulative tendencies throughout the story (ugh and it’s too painful for me to go back for examples rn).
The last three chapters of the story depict Ash very brutally raping Lyle due to his rut. Including knowingly ignoring Lyle crying from pain, exhaustion, and wanting to stop, Lyle constantly begging for Ash to wait or stop, Ash saying he is going to keep going/couldn’t help himself, and knotting Lyle while Lyle screams for him to stop/he’s in pain and Ash telling him he just has to deal with the pain.
And THEN revealing that despite being in rut, he not only meant everything he said, which would include him ignoring Lyle’s begging to stop, and ALSO saying he had no regrets about knotting Lyle…
And then following it up with being sweet, playing the victim by worrying Lyle will break up with him, and then giving him an extremely meaningful gift.
Like. The last chapters of the main story are literally textbook examples of the cycle of an abusive relationship. I really wish I was exaggerating but like. It’s like the author went down a list of examples of how abusers try to make up their abuse to their victim.
