Her mom didn't die immediately so she very well remembers what her mother said to her, so she must have been cared for 2 a certain point. But for the most part it seems like she survived on her own with the help of animals and the spirirt friend that comes in the winter whose taught her kost of what she knoes. She resided in the rundown storage castle so she probably found things there as well to live off of.
