I honestly never trust a person or character who says "to be honest/now that you mention it". Like am I wrong or am I wrong that these people noticed shit but said nothing, it's like when it took me 3 years to realize(when she let it slip) my friend(of 6 years) was in a large school group where they would have instances of gossiping about me, and she also told me about rumours people made up about me 2 years ago from the time she told me. Like I really started to connect dots and some things made sense as to why some people I barley knew had beef/constantly commented on how they disliked me to the point that they were doing it so frequently I noticed often.
