It’s anime. It’s 3D animated though. Some people hate it, some people love it. The art looks a little bit different from the manga, a little bit more traditional anime than some of the semi-realistic styles in the manga. But personally I like it, it looks like a video game. The storyline does divulge around season 2 though. I haven’t seen the movies so I’m not sure about them.
there's a 3D anime on netflix and it definitely take's a good few minutes to get used to the art but once you get sucked into the story, you don't even notice and OH MY GOD, THE ACTION SCENES ARE AMAZING. there's this one scene when sato rescues Kei from that gov. facility and its a MASTERPIECE. i highly recommend
