I think Tory is a spy for Lariette's father and when the Emperor found out about it, he killed her for the stunning betrayal. That said, I'm crossing my fingers for this not to be a forgiveness arch... I hope she doesn't fall for him and then begins to try to understand him and his motives. It would be cliche to the core.
