Rashta deserves a bad ending. She never valued the life of anyone but herself. Even now, she deludes herself by claiming she wishes the Iskuas were her parents - but she only feels this way because she likes what SHE gets out of them. She didn't care how THEY felt, missing their child. She didn't care that she was making them harm someone they loved. Her greatest flaw isn't that she's stupid and easy to manipulate by political enemies, it's that whenever she gets any measure of power, she uses it to be needlessly cruel. She's a victim of horrible things and it's affected the choices she makes, yes, but a line has to be drawn somewhere. Multiple murders are not in fact excused by PTSD.
That said, the fact that her cruelty became overshadowed by her stupidity in the end is a disservice to her character. It's hard to hold her accountable for the choices she made when somebody else is responsible for giving her all the worst choices. It would've been much more satisfying if she herself wanted to callously manipulate Ergi, and Ergi turned the tables on her and exposed the level of cruelty she was already comfortable with. Instead she became more and more helpless and weak, and therefore not ultimately responsible for the choices she made. I don't think her ending is actually unjust, but I understand why it FEELS like it is.
But you know whose ending is unjust? Sovieshu. A shining example of a man who made everything worse for everyone, despite having all the power and all possible options. He deserves much worse than just Being Sad over losing Navier and Being Embarrassed over Rashta. His daughter isn't his own, but he can still raise her with love. He has his empire, status, wealth, and the Western Empire has even stopped bullying their mages. As the catalyst for this whole fiasco, he was not punished nearly enough. Justice for Sovieshu! Guillotine for Sovieshu!
i like want them to get back together, but at the same time i love seeing him suffer and i hope to see more of it. i KNOW she loves him and they'll probably be happy together in the end, but i also NEED him to hurt as much as possible before we get to that point haha.
and i do feel awful about what happened to him as a victim of human trafficking and countless human rights violations, and he was completely in the right to resent her ignorance after his whole life has been coloured in blood - she also admits this. i just think his level of cruelty was excessive for that purpose, borne more from his resentment of her not living up to his made-up image of her. he's also just kind of stupid, so i like that he gets to see the consequences of his own actions. you "didn't want her to die"?? like what did you think happens when people fall into bottomless misery? this is the guy we're supposed to trust in running a post-coup country.
dang, the pacing on the last 30 chapters went full Nightcore. I honestly don't have a problem with her getting together with the prince (though I also liked the redhead best and green-hair second-best). But we should've seen her actually separate him mentally from the first version of him. And we should've seen more of him *knowing* what he did in the other life, and reacting to it. There wasn't enough closure, for her or for the readers.
Also is it just me or did the dresses all get really hideous suddenly. I thought Jieun was supposed to be effortlessly taking control of society, so why is she dressing in puke green or wearing the most clashing over-the-top accessories ever. It's not just her either, wth was Aristia wearing for her coming-of-age party?? That pink was just terrible on her. The cut did her no favours either.
If it's true that the author rushed the ending bc they were getting so much hate for this comic, then by god, I wish all the banes of the world on the people responsible for sending the hate to them. Making the author wrap it up in this way, like it's better now? The plot beats were fine and could've been great with enough time to build naturally. Now the haters have ruined it for everyone. Wishing healing and happiness to the author despite everything.
cesare i understand you're going through a lot and you've got your own plans and ideas but pls understand you're turning us all into children of divorce here, GIVE HER A CRUMB, WE NEED THIS
the soft look in his eyes this chapter will sustain me until the next one, pls don't let my waiting be for naught
She did approach him because of his status in the first place, but it's not crucial to her. Ilya's smart and resourceful, and she has her whole family on her side in this - if she puts her mind to it, she can end this engagement in some other way.
Rather, Karhan not being the heir solves a much bigger problem down the line - their marriage and Ilya's inheritance. She said she wants to be her own family's heir, she wouldn't be able to do that if she has to marry into Karhan's family. If they married, Ilya's family would either be led by her brother, or be absorbed into the ducal family and disappear.
This isn't a problem for her currently because she doesn't plan to actually marry him yet, and nobody else knows she wants to inherit her family and therefore doesn't question their relationship. But we know how these things go - once she realizes she's fallen for him for real, she's probably gonna wanna marry him, and him being the heir would force her to choose between her family and his.
(I imagine the solution she comes up with may involve making Karhan the heir for real, but the point remains that for them to get married without Ilya sacrificing her own ambitions, he'll have to step down from that role eventually anyway.
It's also possible she won't actually make him any more of an heir than he currently is, but will make sure everyone else BELIEVES he's the heir. Because legally he's already the heir, the fact that the duchess is planning to swap him out for the other son is just hearsay about what *might* happen someday, it has no bearing on Karhan's current position in court or society.)
Yep agree ok and so what if he isn't the "real" heir. He is a official heir right now and no one else knows so whatever. And yeah she did choose him bc he has a higher title then that bastard but she doesn't care for the title much. She can just resolve the engagement faster when he's still the official heir and there would be no problem on her part bc she got what she wanted. And you're right if he isn't a heir it will make their potential marriage easier (once they both admitthey lile each other) the biggest plus would be that shouldn't need to deal with that awful mother in law
Unbothered, as she should be. Why would her position change from this? She wasn't adopted to replace a "real" daughter, the duke didn't even know he had one. Her mother married the duke legitimately and she and her brother were adopted as a result. The new daughter's appearance doesn't dissolve the duke's second marriage, so it also has no impact on our girl's position.
In conclusion, those noble girls are dumb as bricks. If you're gonna try to verbally humiliate someone, make sure it at least makes sense.
