amidst all this tension going on, no one has been theorizing with the latest raws so if someone wants to, do so with me. i'll just write down everything i understood and if you don't want the raws, please ignore instead of hating.
so the latest raw, chapter 38, started off from where it was left which was seungho's little brother leaving and inhun wondering who he is. then the next scene shows us seungho and nakyum sleeping together really closely in the spoons position (basically like cuddling) and nakyum is literally wrapped with the blanket and seungho has none on top of him. then it was shown that nakyum was going to leave seungho's room but he grabbed his wrist and told him to stay which led to them sleeping together. nakyum turns around to look at him but gets shocked over something and quickly turns back. it's morning and nakyum wakes up to look for seungho next to him but he was gone before he woke up. then it's shown that inhun is trying to find nakyum and when he comes across, inhun asks him where he was and what's with his appearance since he just woke up. inhun asks him if he was in seungho's room all night which nakyum denies but inhun says that the servants told him that nakyum was in seungho's room the whole night together with him and asks if he was painting for him since his shirt is stained with ink but is confused about how the ink could stain his shirt instead of hands. then inhun changes the topic and tells him that he got to know seungho's brother visited last night and nakyum what little bro talked about with seungho. nakyum then remembers how seungho was clenching his fist when talking to his little brother, remembering that, nakyum lies to inhun and tells him that he doesn't know anything about little brother and seungho's conversation to which inhun questions him with a "what?" and about him being together with seungho to which nakyum answers with another lie by denying that he wasn't with him. then it's shown that nakyum is sitting alone in a room and thinking about why he lied to inhun when he was in fact with seungho the entire night and also slept laying with him then questions himself again with "but still" and then it is shown what nakyum saw when he turned around to see seungho while they laying together which was seungho making a very distressed and troubled expression with his eyes closed as if he's trying very hard to sleep. he's awakened from his daze by a female servant who asks him what's he doing there and tells him to come by. then nakyum is shown sitting with two female servants on the floor and while they start to eat, one of the female servant starts by telling nakyum how everyone hates him there and how he doesn't do any work and just sits around doing cheap things with seungho to which nakyum confusingly replies by saying that he isn't a slave there and then the other female servant mocks him by asking then what do he think he is and is joined by first female servant who says how nakyum has short hair and dirty appearance/clothes just like a slave and then starts nitpicking about his ink stained shirt and says how she wants to beat him and the other female servant agrees with her too and poor nakyum is confused about what is going on and they try to force his jacket shirt off but are suddenly interrupted by seungho questioning what they're doing which scares the female servants and the chapter basically ends with nakyum looking at seungho who isn't wearing his usual headband this time. sksks we're closer to open hair seungho. also, correct me if i'm wrong in some parts since my korean isn't as good as it should be, lol.

Well, I won't be able to help you with further translation as I have zero knowledge of Korean and was waiting for a kind soul like yours to translate the chapter for me. People were kindly giving little bits of translation and this story tends to have well placed words that create an entire different meaning from the scene you just saw.
So thank you for taking the time to translate.
One thing that was new to me was that the servant women were also being mean to Nakyum. I thought they were trying to find out gossip from him about what he was doing with the lord. They are clearly talking about it nonstop if it reached Inhun's ears.
I think this is going to cause SH to take some more definite actions in regards to NK's status in his home. SH seems to be using the paintings now just as an excuse to have NK close to him. SH hasn't needed the paintings to "complete his nightly activities" for a while and even less so after sleeping with NK.
At the very least, he might make him his body servant to start.
It was obvious to me, at least, that he had every intention to keep his word about not touching NK the night before until he was surprised by NK being aroused.
And I also think that despite SH's encounter with his brother, his end game for that night was to just sleep (and I mean sleep) with Nakyum. It can't be lost to him that he sleeps because of NK, whether NK's presence serves to calm or soothe him seems evident in the way that SH becomes playful and relaxed around him. He also enjoys seeing NK. He revels in him.
SH appears to be rapidly progressing in what he wants from NK. This doesn't mean I think he thinks he is in love. I also don't think he is using him, and that he will treat him better as weird as that may sound. I think NK satisfies him as no one person has before and SH is assertive and confident enough to go to the next logical step for him which would be to raise NK up and maybe make him his paramour.
He doesn't seem to have ever lost any sleep about NK's status. His mockery of NK, before just seems like a SH thing with the added bonus of NK's precious reactions.
I also don't think, but I could be wrong, that SH would raise NK up to humiliate his father for whatever happened between them.
I just think that SH has been unsettled and restless and from very early on NK has excited him and brought freshness and innocence into SH's hedonistic existence.
I used to think that SH's blatant promiscuity was meant as a dig at his father (how public it was - not the fantastic sex drive). But now I get the feeling that SH's sexual overdrive was more about exorcising whatever ghosts or hurts he has been nurturing for 10 years. Ten years is a long time to cement some very bad habits.
I am really surprised at the servants though. We saw SH beat the living bejeesus out of some of them when NK ran off but this makes me think they are treated better than most servants (that ain't saying a lot) as they don't seem to be in the fear of God over all the gossiping they are doing (That older servant is the man, though).
SH publicly clings to NK. A lowborn.
SH caresses his cheek after humiliating a noble over him, doesn't know what the word personal space is when walking up to NK and acts in a flirtatious way that cannot be misinterpreted as anything but, in plain view of others.
Even if NK and SH had stayed up knitting all night the servants would have assumed Sh and NK were sleeping together. They know their lord.
So for them to start bullying the boy their master has taken an interest to is pretty bold and reckless.
Unless the story takes another unforeseen turn due to the new characters that may soon come our way, I think SH may be, in the future, progressing to making NK his official paramour so every one threads lightly and leave NK alone.

i love the words you used to describe your perspective of the story and maybe seungho might as well make nakyum his official paramour but for now, i don't think he, himself knows how deduce his own feelings since he supposedly went through a traumatic experience and maybe that experience has dulled his sense of feelings and rationality for now but maybe that will change with nakyum's presence. also, it's noticeable how he has extreme trust issues but seems to be more open with nakyum considering how seungho even let nakyum stay with him even when he was going to have an "important" conversation with his younger brother. in addition, we don't know about nakyum's true birth status. for now, he's considered a low born who was raised in a kisaeng house but maybe he could turn out to be a noble's secret child and that might change the power dynamics between seungho and nakyum but seungho does not seem to be the person to let go of nakyum as easily as one might thinks since he finds solace in nakyum. his younger brother has also been introduced now and we don't what changes he might bring too though it's sorta unlikely that he'll take an interest in nakyum, it's a possibility.

Ohhh! I didn't even think on that possibility and that has the added bonus of lending the story that twist and darker theme it already has, like you'd said.
It would certainly give Nakyum immediate legitimacy and additional protection, even if those around him had a problem with it or knew they were lovers, NK would still be more secured.
I just get the sense that SH doesn't want to be questioned and is very firm in his decisions once his mind is set. He is a nip-it-in-the-bud kinda a guy and this nonsense with the servants bullying NK won't be allowed to continued. Especially after witnessing it.
I like this possibility. Hits all the right spots.
My view of the paramour thing is that it is too insecure for NK since he doesn't have status to back him. And even though I think both scenarios would still built envy and resentment towards NK, only your idea can protect him better.

I don't think that SH needs to be clear on his feelings to know what he wants.
He is very decisive and plunges ahead.
Nakyum is what I want. Nakyum is what satisfies me. I really think that's all that's on his mind. He seems to take things as they happen, when they happen, breaks them down and comes with a resolution.
Aside for the time that SH questioned not understanding why he felt so angry when NK defended Inhun, I don't think SH is digging too deep into his feelings just what he wants now.
I don't think SH is even at a place where he thinks he is in love with NK. Hell, I don't think at this moment he is in love at all. I think he is at the beginning of it and it makes him feel good and he is going with that feeling.
And maybe NK's birth will play to something in the future. It gets brought up in the story several times and I don't think by accident.
But I also think that NK's connection to SH could be essential for him to have the necessary exposure to be found out since he would be moving in the right circles to encounter that possible noble family. This writer could make that secret noble born child premise interesting, though I like the boy that came from nothing, was considered nothing and brought someone so far "above" him to love him better.
NK is far too special as a character to not merit this on his own. I know his possible noble birth offers NK protection and that's what we all want. But to me, it also offers NK a legitimacy he doesn't need. Like that's what would make NK good enough for anything and anyone.
I don't know, I am sure if that happens it would be masterfully handled by Byenduck and I look forward to it.
As for SH's younger brother, I'll wait and see. I hesitate to guess what his role could be aside from bringing us the much desired background on SH. He is too new and stories that have every sibling being gay or interested in the same sex make me cringe and takes me right out of the story. Like I know it is fiction but let's keep it within the realm of possibilities here.

This is the kind of discussion I like to read about POTN :))
Did you guys read the latest fan trad. on
https://mangazuki.site/manga/painter-of-the-night-manga/ ? What do you guys think about the part where that old man spoke with the Jung In Hun about the Yoon family?
I already have my own theory about it.

read from the raws already but went back again to read the translation. it's hard to say since what the old man said was vague and ambiguous to me in terms of the events that preceded yoon family's decline and survival but the yoon family seems pretty powerful to me despite being in decline since their enemies were basically purged after they left. also, i think their reason for leaving might be because of seungho. perhaps it was because of an incident that was the cause of his trauma or him being humiliated and having his top knot cut off since it was a big deal for males at the time or maybe because of his homosexual promiscuous nature. it could any of that or maybe none but for inhun to know about seungho's family history is a bit unsettling. he's going around and trying to extracts bits of information about him from anyone who knows him. inhun is manipulative and we don't know how much information he has gathered so far. how about your theory?? :)

Just adding my two cents here, I know your comment wasn't addressed to me but...
To a certain extent, if the fan translation is correct, SH confirmed that his homosexuality play a part into some of the reason for the separation from his family. At least, I took his comment to his brother that he was now living the way his father wanted him to (or something to that effect) and what more could he want from him to hint at that.
My feeling is that he was involved with someone that caused quite a scandal and something a lot more serious than his top knot being cut off happened like a death or some nasty repercussions. The top knot being cut off made the humiliation public for SH and kept quiet what happened while laying the implied fault on him.
Something very serious happened. Something you can't let go off. And I think SH was made the villain when he might not be.
I think this is the reason why that older servant stayed behind with SH. He seems to have loyalty towards him and some level, not pity, I don't know, he is very focused on his well-being and not out of self interest. It is like SH as he was is very present for him (don't get me wrong he sounds like a little shit after he told NK what he used to do to the servants when he was young).
Inhun is going to be a big regret later on. It is like the writer is telegraphing it with S.O.S all over it. I think he will hurt both SH and NK a great deal later on the story.

my comment wasn't specifically addressed to anyone so your perspective on it is truly appreciated :) and about what you said, i too, agree with the incident being a scandalous one which resulted in his trauma. i feel like seungho's family or only him were excessively slandered which caused them to leave seungho behind though he's a noble still in power so i'm not sure about that part. and yes, the older servant seems to be a good person though him giving nakyum that aphrodisiac like medicine was sketchy but that too, can be taken in three ways; either he was expecting nakyum and seungho to have sex like they always do and gave him that medicine so that he can keep up with seungho's libido or he just didn't know about it's effects or he purposefully gave him the medicine so nakyum's sexual drive can awaken with seungho. but if he is truly a good person then that suggests him staying loyal to seungho means that seungho wasn't always the person with violent mood swings before his traumatic incident. inhun might as well be a big threat later on but seeing how we're shown his ventures of trying to extract information on seungho, it could be that seungho might pull a reverse card on him later on. it can't be that he's completely clueless about the activities of a sketchy person living in his house especially since seungho strongly dislikes him and is probably aware of him being a manipulative snake seeing how he sighed when he saw nakyum talking with inhun and saying "why doesn't he understand?" meaning he most likely knows about inhun's true personality and intentions.

I think that the theory developped by DoopDoop here is interesting and pertinent, just like you added, it can explain why Seungho's family has left him alone in the house.
Though my take on this part is that, way before any scandale cause by Seungho, the gay older son, the Yoon family already had a lot of troubles and ennemies for whatever reason.
The old man didn't sayd much to In Hun, but the ennemies of the Yoon family (the scene of the "purge") seemed to be quite numerous, and in my opinion they couldn't just hate the family for a son being homo, or even when that son is involved in some big gay scandal.
But yes, the fact that SH is openly homo could've worsened the situation, and I'm agree that the father might just lashed out on SH.
It looked like whatever conflict or resentment these people had towards the family, it was more of a political matter, or any other matter enough serious for the Yoon to be threaten to declin.
Then, after the family had left without SH, the old man mentioned about the ennemies of the family being purged. Again, we're left with little infos about that episode...
Though I believe SH took care of the "problem" alone himself and made the purge, helped by his spies. Knowing the young Lord and his personality; the fact that he's a man of action and isn't afraid to kill himself whoever he wants dead, he was surely the one to erase these rivals (or at least the instigator).
One reason is, if he didn't murder them, he won't be able to lead such depraved and fearless liefestyle today (orgies with young noblemen, kill whoever lower class to him, even treat badly other fellow nobles...).
Seungho is fearless but seems to be a lonely and lost soul... Sometimes I can't help but feel sorry also for him.
About Jung In-Hun roaming around the touwn getting dirt on SH, I wonder HOW the Lord isn't still aware about his schemes. Because if the a scholar like In Hun can get people and spies to do bad deeds for him, the Lord is even more powerful and must have even more spies. So how...?

the old man saying "how long will fate be favorable to these people?" gives of an impression of them being an unlikable family since it seems like the old man didn't think of the yoon family in a good manner and referred to them as "these people" bitterly, that's what the tone of the translation suggested . nobles at the time were involved in numerous and infamous political matters but what matter was so grave that the yoon family had to experience a dreadful decline and give up their privileges to move away? and i do agree with seungho taking care of the problem himself since he was the only member left behind and right after his family left, the enemies were basically purged. seungho is most likely the one to do something like this and like you said about seungho supposedly having spies to help him with his deeds, he must've hired some of those spies to keep tabs on inhun since it's highly impossible for him to unaware of about the ventures of a person he extremely dislikes and so he most probably knows what inhun is up to.

I think the servant's actions about the aphrodisiac can be taken (from my perspective at least) as well meaning on NK's behalf and here's why I think this: he has taken care of NK twice after SH raped him. He figures that it is very likely that SH would force NK into sex again so he is trying to have NK at least comply and experience pleasure when SH pushes for what he assumes will be an inevitable sexual encounter with NK again. It is just a matter of time.
He can't rat SH out to the authorities (they wouldn't care), SH is pretty much above the law when it comes to the welfare of low born (his reputation, household and desires above everyone else's), he can't help NK escape (refer to SH's fury the last time NK ran away) and he isn't privy to SH's concessions (like really that blowjob was SH's idea of restrain - seriously I think he would have left it at only that despite the brother's appearance).
Is it shady? Yes. Is it wrong? Yes. But considering the alternative of having this boy torn apart again by SH, it is his best case scenario due to their settings/time/class and actually very kind. There may be some self interest like not getting beat up by SH, or displeasing a volatile lord but he is definitely taking NK into consideration.
As for Inhun, I have also considered that turn of events. That SH would be aware of the upcoming betrayal by him. SH read him like a book on their first meeting, he knows he is an ungrateful, conceited worm and the type of person that SH seems to hate (aside from NK's devotion) the most. That bastard couldn't tamp down his disdain for the lower classes he thought and considered them unworthy of his valuable time, but it wasn't beneath him to drape himself in the accolades given to him for his "kindness". He plays the role of benevolent Sir in front of the lower classes but spills his guts about the tragedy of having to be among them to anyone else above them.
SH is also much better at deception and keeping his cards close at all times. Inhun spills his guts or does not measure his words with people he think are inconsequential and THAT could bite him in the butt.
If things with NK develop for the better, is SH the type of person that would be distracted and consumed by that? I don't think so. Especially if the trauma he experienced followed along the same veins. He might actually try to protect what he has.
But maybe SH would have too much on his plate. His family, the scandal getting out, some sort further loss of power, someone else interested in NK, etc. In other words, no scenario is out of the question here.
But Inhun will do something, whether it is big or stopped.

I agree with this theory that whatever happened was more along the lines of a very dangerous political situation and it wasn't just an over reaction to SH being gay. And it reeks of the walls closing in on them at the time.
I think whatever happened with SH or TO SH (more on this idea later) could have been used further against them or just had the bad luck of happening at the wrong time.
What's clear is that SH's family went into protective mode and SH feels he was abandoned and maligned by it. What happened to SH has been turned into an accusation against him and it is clear he feels otherwise. And I don't think he is being delusional about it. I keep seeing SH as being very rational but always on edge and certain things push him into violence. Unstable.
SH's behavior reminds me of a defiant child (regarding his reputation as a very proud sodomite), taking things to the extreme to cause damage because it is the only way he sees at getting back at his family but he isn't a nihilist or suicidal, he is just very, very angry.
I see three possible scenarios:
The first that he was seduced by the wrong person (an enemy of his family. Manipulating him behind the scenes) and possibly used to harm them. SH could have been seen not only as a traitor and conspirator and the fact that he is gay was just an added bonus.
Second, SH loved and lost (a.k.a. family killed) a lover. Again, this requires the scenario that the family was under siege and this could be used in some way, shape or form that would annihilate them. As the story progresses to me this is the less likely scenario. May be my romanticism blinds me but I would expect more veneration for someone loved and lost...unless there was some sort of break (like finding out a betrayal) that followed.
And third, and admittedly the most out there, SH was raped, misunderstood, blamed and abandoned and then made a villain. This to me doesn't quite jibe because of NK...BUT I keep coming back to SH not setting out to rape NK.
Bear with me here please. NK and SH had a wonderful night together (SH vision) just a few days before. NK had back pain and the likes but nothing much. SH was dying to relive this night.
SH meets NK in the pavilion, is frustrated that he can't remember and pushes to make NK recall, it doesn't go his way and NK gets mad, bursting his bubble of this fantasy night he built between them and he decides he have him and force him to pleasure.
The ass didn't think he would hurt NK, because he thought NK would be turned on regardless (wrong!) on the memory of the pleasure he experienced since NK remembered what he did.
He went at it like beast, hurt an unprepared and not turned on at all NK and felt like shit.
I still believe NK had been hurt badly that night and was hurt further later on their latest encounter despite SH's effort to ensure he was prepared.
I am curious to know any other theories about this.
But the underlining idea for me here is that it seems like it wasn't just SH being gay that cause the rupture with his family and then they made him the escape goat to top it all off.
I agree that whatever happened later had been swiftly and brutally resolved as both SH and his family are living in relative peace and SH does as he pleases. I also think SH has the authoritative personality and ruthlessness to wipe his enemies specially after he suffered the repercussions of what was going on. I assume SH also has military training being a lord and trained all his life to take over for his father.
In regards to Inhun, maybe SH has been too preoccupied by NK and his family as they have been attempting to reach him to see further than his irritation that NK can't see through that trash. But that could change quickly.

i agree with the point of seungho's homosexual nature not being the main reason why he was left behind. right now, my thoughts have changed to seungho not having anything to do with his family's decline but because he went through something else which led him to be abandoned by his family. your first scenario seems more likely to have happened about him being manipulated and seduced by the wrong person since he seems to have extreme trust issues with people so it might be due to being betrayed by someone in the past plus the old servant had already said that he wasn't always like the he way he is before. maybe before everything happened to him, he was a much kind hearted and compassionate person but his trauma changed everything which also resulted in his violent mood swings. nakyum is very naive and innocent and maybe seungho sees a glimpse of his past self in him somehow which is why it irritates him seeing nakyum trust inhun so much since inhun is a wolf in sheep's clothing, jealousy might also have some part in that. seungho currently also seems to be going through a period of difficulty with himself judging by the dark circles that have been under his eyes for a while now meaning he has problem sleeping which indicates that there are things that have been on his mind for a while now which he used to relieve by having sex but now that he has slept with nakyum, he is addicted to the latter who is scared of him which further displeases him since he wants nakyum to feel good with him too like he did the first time not knowing he was with seungho. now that he's trying to give nakyum space, all the things that were on his mind are coming back plus his brother coming to request him to see their father is another burden on his shoulder. it was shown how he was clenching his fist while talking to his brother and how he was making such a trouble distressed expression while trying to sleep which no one has been making a point of since he's never made such a painful face before. maybe seungho tried to handle his family's situation but his father refused him to take part in anything and he is resentful because of that or maybe his family did something to a person he cared about to teach him to be ruthless and strong since it was considered as a characteristic of nobles which is why he told his brother that he's living the way their father wanted him too and that would be being ruthless and estranged from people but this is unlikely. he might also have tried to prove something by purging his family's enemies after they left.

This!
I agree with everything you have said here and thank you for putting it so eloquently.
That first scenario I wrote, to me, seems the most likely as well. At least in relation to the other two.
The way his father reacted was very reminiscent to a response to a life and death situation, and SH was treated as being part of the cause.
SH does appear to have plenty on his mind as well, not just his infatuation with NK and like you noted everything seems to be coming his way all at once.
But I think that perhaps all this stress and pain coming SH's way could also soften NK towards him. NK is very kind as shown when he lied to Inhun on SH's behalf. SH hasn't merited this from NK and even our baby boy wondered why he did it (answer is kindness).
The fact that NK is becoming privy to SH's private affairs is not lost on him either, though he may be struggling in understanding the why of things.
Hard to go on, when you covered everything so well. Thank you for your insightful comment.

oof seungho and nakyum were sleeping together in the spoons position with seungho being the bigger spoon, obviously and when nakyum turned back to look at him, he saw seungho's distressed and troubled expression like he looked so vulnerable as he was trying to sleep and so, nakyum quickly turned around and slept. that was cute, ngl. also inhun is a manipluative ass and aaghh, i hope nakyum realizes this soon. also, we got to see seungho without his headband so ig that's some development that will lead us to see him with his hair untied since everyone's thirsty for that..

the korean version of this webtoon has been completed a while ago and i was surprised when i found the translated version of lezhin and came to check if it was here but it wasn't so i decided to do it even tho i knew i won't be able to upload the other chapters, lol but i hope some angel picks it soon since i'm pretty curious about how the story goes on since reading raws with my limited korean was hard.

sure, here you go: https://www.lezhin.com/en/comic/fineline

heyyaa beautiful peeps, first chapter has been uploaded. i'll be uploading the next two chapters too so it would be cool if someone picks it after i'm done with that and sorry, i forgot to mention about supporting the author on lezhin if you can; https://www.lezhin.com/en/comic/tocatchafallingstar. take caree y'all

heyyoo beautiful peepss!! it took me so long just to upload one chapter like honestly, it took me like 2 hours or so but it was a cool experience since it was my first time, hehe. the english version on lezhin is 6 chapters ahead so it'll be nice if someone picks it up soon. here's the link: https://www.lezhin.com/en/comic/hide_and_seek_en so go check it out y'all. also, i apologize again for the not so good quality since i'm quite inexperienced and did it on my laptop on a whim :) have a good day/ night.

damn, i had been waiting for friday to come so i can finally see seungho's younger brother and goshh.. he's so adorableee. seungwon has this almost innocent atmosphere around him, i feel like that's what the author has tried to depict. maybe he'll end up the changing the whole thing going on between nakyum and seungho like idk (also, nakyum holding seungho's face with both of his hands was cute ngl). he might even become nakyum's saviour or something. i want him to bring even more depth to the plot but at the same time, i don't want the learned sir to know about him cause he seriously puts me off but we can see that he's curious now tsk. honestly, i have no idea where this story is going and that's what makes reading this manhwa so damn exciting plus it's fun theorizing with everyone here.
i really hope someone picks this up. i can help with translating, at most since i've tried cleaning and stuff but it's too hard for me sksks
