In Japan, they bathe before getting into the tub. Usually there is a stool to sit on and a shower head. They wash themselves thoroughly, that way there is no soap or anything else in the tub. The whole family uses the same water and it can be used for laundry as well.

His statement that he doesn't have one MAY stem from the fact that he cannot see his own. If he can't see his own, he would automatically assume that it is because he doesn't have one.
