I think he was in search of Isis and Horus. They were in hiding.
No matter the reason, which I'm not sure of either btw his trauma is not a reason to harm others, but even if there was a very good reason it just can't excuse the horrific things he's done.

Nvm I take it back I can’t find the source for the innocents part, but he fs needed the souls to lvl up his weapon and he did mention he killed women who looked like isis because their rage reminded him of her
