it's because these are made up characters and shipping them will not hurt them, damage their careers, or make them uncomfortable. they aren't real. when you publicly ship REAL PEOPLE, it has real life consequences on real life people. so, we refrain from shipping them (or any real life figures) out of respect and consideration for their wellbeing and careers. it's the decent thing to do if you care about them. so no, not hypocritical at all. since we don't have a problem with homosexuality, or even shipping, but we do have a problem with it being used to erase/assume other people's identity and then try to color their friendships as something sexual. just let them be?? their identity and romantic relationships are no ones business but their own.
