Thought this was gonna be good and considering that a background plot point regarding the Kurkans is that they're seen as "savages" I was hyped because that's such a real world parallel.
Now, that said: it's so fucked up that they took a very real Romani slur and applied it to a caricature of the Romani people, including a lot of harmful stereotypes that have been applied to the Romani people. Also **SPOILERS** The main villain is her mom who is a g*psy?! and she ate people's hearts to fuel her power **Spoiler End*
If they don't get the fuck outta here with that bullshit, this reminds me of that one Mother SPirit wannabe comic that got posted and it was one pretty guy with brown skin and then a bunch of racist Jim crow looking ass caricatures.
Hmm. But that stereotype is very much alive in Romani culture, at least some. Foretelling future, coffee reading, crafts such as those. Romani people are very diverse as they are dispersed all over the world (life of nomads) and some have let go of these practices, some haven't, but in the past, romani people indeed had the mentioned practices in the past especially (and this comic's setting is in the past) It was a very difficult time, and political/cultural correctness was non existent.
That being said, Kurkhans are being portrayed to look as Arabic, seeing their practices, skin tones, clothes, style, but you are excited they are called barbaric, as oposed to the pale royals who are obviously represent europeans... Arabs were always the bad guys for the western "white" world. See how this corectness and shit goes deep and hypocritical?

Depends on which romani people you ask. American Romani will probably be offended. European don't care. We call them cigani and they prefer this term over roma
the word itself is correlated to nomad(they might mean the same thing) but it has been used derogatorily so you can see why some people would rather not use them and some romani people wouldn’t like being called that. however, in other languages, mostly balcanic ones, romani are called cigani/tigani/similar which comes from greek and means dirty/not to be touched (or close to that) - a lot of romani don’t know this and prefer this over “roma/romani” but it’s mostly due to lack of knowledge or just ignorance. also, afaik in some european countries romani were literally slaves in the past but not enough people talk about that and it’s not widely known. i hope this is ok, i’ve explained everything from memory
As far as i know, the greek etimology tsinganos means "those who dont want to be touched" or "untouchable", that is the true meaning of the tsigan word. However, negative connotations change the meaning of the word...
