from my own understanding, when a pure batsu have sex with human, the batsu's lifespan will be shorten more, they'll fall sick and die faster but as Rei is a half human when he have sex with Theo his half batsu body did become weak just like how his father was sick after sleeping with his human mother. the crackle sounds in the body shows their body is reacting, and when Rei was falling sick and weaker the time when his hair started changing to black, his eyes and horns seems burned, that's the reaction for him to become a complete human since he has human blood. If he was a pure batsu that time when he fell sick and his body is reacting he'd be dead already but thanks to his mother's human blood his body reacted the other way and he became a human. If you noticed he no longer has horns. I think his horns were burned because the time when his hair changed into black his body temperature was higher than usual.
