They are so cut off from humans and see them as creatures that are weak and fragile, hence why they cannot fathom the idea that a human can react negatively not because they were abused but more as a defense mechanism to something they are frightened of. It seems to me they cannot comprehend the thought that one can be afraid of one yet not fear another.
Their putting him in a sterile environment is more of a way to keep him 'isolated and safe' from potential elements, especially since he showed violent tendencies. They only know that they need to feed and keep him happy so when he doesn't eat, they address the issue by hooking him up to nutrient fluids and when he cries, they sedate him to make him calm not knowing that their own actions of taking him away from Miria was the root cause of everything.
Still, I loathe seeing our little round one cry himself hoarse. He even tried to call for her even as he can barely utter words because that is how much he missed her. I mean come on, alien peeps, he defied the laws of nature and ran away on his own to find his mom.
