she could have just threatened to elope without his permission or listen to his (very valid) reasoning and explain why he's wrong. gaslighting someone into thinking it's their fault for you about to commit suicide is gross and is a tactic used in abusive relationships to keep the victim with them.
I agree that it's wrong but I think she was trying to scare him not gaslight him (although that's what she did). I don't think eloping would have scared him bc she said she wasn't giving up whether he liked it or not (indirectly threatening elopement) and he just kept arguing with her. I don't know what else she could've said but she shouldn't have used suicide. Maybe she should've threatened to never talk to him again???
Yeah, or just listen to him and explain the situation to him. He thinks she just met him a month ago and is being overly emotional and doesn't know what she's getting into. His opinions are valid and just shutting him down and telling him she'll kill herself unless he agrees isn't at all a good idea. That's true she should've listened bc he was actually abt to say something but she cut him off. He was tryna say something abt the Escliffes (is that how you spell it???) not being compatible with the Duke's family.
