ok so this is spoilers for the end (i'd be surprised if you hadn't read it already)
ok so i think that Kaoru cutting the string was a test of fate and i think that he shouldn’t have been so scared to cut the string. i understand why he was scared to tell Kamisawa that the string was connected and how he had all of his anxieties about relationships but in all honestly imo i think it was a big test from fate itself lmao. because you can very clearly see that Kaoru loves Kamisawa and vice versa, basically what i'm trying to say is i think fate rigged it so Kaoru could in fact never EVER have his string be connected to anyone else BUT because he met Kamisawa and they both fell very deeply in love fate wanted to make an exception by creating the test. the test of Kamisawa's string connecting to a womans, if Kaoru could prove his love was so strong he would even go so fare as to cut the string (like Kamisawa asked) because he wanted to be selfish (for once) and give into his desire and need for Kamisawa, fate would let Kaoru's string connect to Kamisawa's.
