I think a lot of it depends on the age of the mangakata and the age of the audience being targeted. Many manga is written for a young female audience, who would be living in a world of bullying still. If you notice, the people making fun of him also look to be catty teen girls in the story.

I think during these 2 years, I've found more people that like anime at my school (they just don't show it as much) haha. But it really was hard to get by when people know you like anime (back then). Cus they make it a point to be annoying and ask stupid questions like "is anime where they animate porn??" Or "is manga basically porn?" Or "what's hentai?" (Classic. Even though they know). Tho that was just people being annoying, but some people genuinely go out of there way to call me names for it... But jokes on them, it's the same people that are watching DBZ or naruto etc, or ask me for anime suggestions now
So it isn't as bad now. Maybe because we've matured somehow
