Whoa?! The ending in the novel was way different, this is much better
Well it's gonna be long so bear with me
In the novel the Duke and the Duchess kind of have to deal with lize after her true colours are revealed.
Edith is pardoned of her crimes and Killian is the one who takes her stand during the trial (Why is my wife getting executed? She's a Rudwick). Killian stands up to his father so the Duke lets Killian save his wife. But she's still imprisoned in some cell on the execution grounds. The third condition was met. Edith accepts her death but didn't die so now the original storyline is entirely gone and author has no control over the characters anymore. But she can't accept it so she goes to the underground prison with the excuse that she's going there to give Edith a hot water bottle. Downstairs she confronts Edith in anger then cuts herself with a knife and tried to frame Edith. But now that she has no control over anyone no one believes lize and this time even the Duke is disappointed at her. Killian brings Edith back home and the Duke and Duchess shower her in gold and gifts and furs and jewellery because they felt sorry. (They don't apologise just give her a lot of stuff as a substitute)
Cliff refuses to let lize go and they decide to get married. She makes Cliff sign a prenup that "he will not divorce her or hurt her and always take her side." Lize wants a hella expensive marriage to force the novel setting and the Duchess and lize get into a big argument about the budget (she wants the entire wedding hall to be decorated with white roses which are hella expensive even for the Duke household the Duchess says let's go with white hydrangeas instead but lize refused and they both have a fall out. Even Cliff doesn't want such an extravagant marriage but in the end he gives in and takes lize's side and his mum is very disappointed)
The wedding happens and ofc Killian and Edith are invited and they pose as the happiest couple there. Author gets mad because Edith looks so much happier than her despite her being a bride and the female lead. All the guests are paying attention to Edith and admiring how Killian is openly showing affection to his wife. Edith even invites the old couple who helped her when she was on the run. She introduces that old couple to some influential Nobels to help their business.
After Edith recovers from everything they both go to their territory (ryzen) and start living there happily. Leaving the toxic family behind to deal with toxic lize.
After the wedding the author becomes more and more unbearable. Even the Duke is fed up of her and the servants don't respect her anymore because the Duchess refuses to speak with lize. She's bitter and angry and even cliff starts to avoid her. Their marriage is a pain for everyone involved. She tries to make friends in the society but because she's not the actual Spring Queen FL she has to face the public with her real personality and that sucks so nobody likes her and she loses respect outside too.
In a desperate attempt to feel like a female lead she decides to host the year-end party and the Duke says wait and learn for five years then you'll be qualified for it but she gets mad throws and tantrum and the Duchess says fine do whatever the fuck you want.
In the original storyline the party happens and some count falls in love with lize (typical setting where the fl just charms everyone.) And he's miserably in love with her and invites her to meet the Crown Prince because the count and the CP are childhood friends. The CP also falls in love with her and admires her for her wisdom and innocent vibe. She earns the favour of the CP and the Duke and Duchess are very happy with her. Then she finds out that the emperor lost his nephew (son of his brother) a long time ago and then this arc happens where lize finds his nephew and the entire empire praises her the she's basking in glory.
This time when the party happens everything is a mess. The budget was three times the previous parties and the Duchess missed the frugal Edith. Cliff gets mad at lize for spending so much and they have a big argument. Lize gets irritated at him and starts fantasizing about meeting new men at the party and cheat on Cliff. The party was a horrible show of money which didn't really impress the guests but kinda sent a message that the Rudwick family is no longer neutral and they're taking part in politics which is like opposite of what the Duke wanted.
The original arc happens. The count meets with her and offers a dance. Lize is extremely happy to get the attention and ignores Cliff to dance with that man in front of everyone which again portraits her in a bad light but she's so drunk on the attention of another man she doesn't care.
The count mentiones the CP and arranges for her to meet him. On the meeting day she gets hella dressed up in a sensual gown like the the original Edith used to wear. She goes to meet the CP and he's not really impressed with her. He kinda mocks her and smirks at her appearance and says all right bye, leave now.
After realising no man is falling over her feet now and no ladies are inviting her for parties like in the original storyline, lize loses her mind. She goes completely off the rails. Cliff and her argue all the time and at one party (very rare invite) she slaps a young noble lady for ignoring her. The trouble she causes keeps increasing.
During this time when the atmosphere is so tense at the mansion, Edith sends christmas letters for everyone. Suddenly the gloomy atmosphere is gone and everyone is so excited to hear from Edith. She sent letters to lize and Cliff too and after all the headache from lize, Cliff finally smiles after a long time. Lize gets mad because even if Edith is not here she still manages to get everyone's attention and love. Later she sees Renon (or Lenon? Idk his name was Renon in the novel) carrying a bunch of letters. She asks him where he's going and he says to the post office. She understands that all the servants (like 50+ letters) are sending replies to Edith and here they refuse to even acknowledge lize who's the new Duchess now. Then she takes out her anger on Renon and criticizes him for everything (because Renon was on good terms with Edith while she was here) Renon gets fed up and leaves the mansion and goes to Rayzen to work for Edith instead. This makes the Duke and Duchess even more upset because lize drove away a good subordinate.
Later the Duke finds out about her secret meeting with the CP and how bad it looked to the emperor. The Emperor calls the Duke to the Imperial Palace to interrogate him about lize's actions. Like what are you up to? Your daughter in law is meeting with my son? Are you betraying the promise you made about not getting involved in politics. This puts the Duke in a lot of trouble with the emperor and he comes back home and gets very angry with lize. They shout and scream at each other and then more madness starts.
Four years passed of this miserable marriage. Cliff has given up but only acts as a husband because of the prenup. The Duke and Duchess are actually depressed because of lize. Also no children are born between these two but Killian and Edith already have a son. This causes more tension and disappointment and disdain in their marriage. Lize is starting to realise that she has only one chance left to make everything like the original storyline. Find the long lost nephew of the emperor which is the last episode of the story.
In the original storyline lize goes to the market to buy a present for the Duke and Duchess for the National day and accidently goes inside a slave auction. There she rescues a boy who was the nephew of the emperor. She didn't know it but she felt sorry for the boy so she brings him along. The boy had no memories but was very well mannered so lize makes him an errand boy. Princess Catherine visits lize and recognises her cousin. She invites lize and the boy to the palace and there the boy's parents recognise him because of a butterfly shaped birthmark on the boy's body and the child is found. Lize becomes a hero in everyone's eyes again.
This time author goes to the outskirts to that auction house to look for the boy. But this time there's someone else in place of the emperor's nephew. The boy had similar appearance but he wasn't the one. Lize is shocked and doesn't know what to do. She cannot find the actual nephew so she decides to take that boy instead.
The boy is called Peryl but she forces him to act like the nephew and names him Johann. She forces him to learn etiquettes and noble manners and gets a butterfly tattooed on his collarbone. Lize and Cliff get into a fight again because she got a handsome young boy to stay with her but she shouts at him and slams the door refusing to listen. She wanted to force the original storyline to happen before Edith and Killian come to the capital on the National day to reclaim her place as the FL.
She goes to the palace with the boy in tow and shows him off to Catherine as her new errand boy. Catherine catches on because the boy was too familiar. When she asks his name the boy says everything that lize taught him.
[["Princess, is there a problem? I rescued this boy from a slave auction, and unfortunately, he doesn't remember much of his past."
"S- slave auction?"
"He does remember a few things, though,
Johann, what were they?"
Johann bowed his head and replied, "I remember living in a very big, very nice house when I was younger. I don't know what I was doing in that house, but remember there was a rug or something hanging on the wall with a sun in the middle of it."
"And?" Catherine asked, her hands shaking.
"All I remember is that a beautiful woman with hair the same color as mine called me 'Johann' and that I had a white dog with black spots, and that the dog's name was Othello."]]
Now all this was very detailed information that only the original boy could know so they all accepted that the emperor's nephew has been found. The emperor sends lize home with a thanks and she returns feeling sucessful that now she'll recieve a medal on the National day and Edith will get jealous.
But this idiot made a mistake. The butterfly shaped mark was supposed to be on the back of his neck and not on his collar bone and so everyone realised the child is fake. Now everyone is suspicious because how did this child know of the tapestry or Othello if he's not the real one?
Somewhere on the road Killian and Edith were travelling, returning to the capital for the National Day. On the road a child (guess who?) suddenly jumped in front of their carriage making them stop. Edith who'd recently become a mother couldn't bear to see a small beggar boy fending for himself. Letting her motherly instincts take over she offers him money but the child bows gracefully like a noble man to a lady and says he doesn't beg. So instead she offers him a job to earn respectable money and the child accepts. Edith names him Daniel and gives him the choice to work as an accountant or a knight or a servant in her castle in Rayzen.
Killian and Edith and their baby boy return to the Rudwick mansion with Daniel but instead of a warm welcome they're met with imperial knights who'd taken over the place. The Duchess came out running and started crying the minute she sees her son and daughter in law. Turns out lize was taken away by the imperial family for disgracing them and lying about the nephew and how did she know all these details. Everyone thought lize was behind the kidnapping and Cliff and Duke were also arrested.
While they were trying to calm down the Duchess another carriage came. The mother of the boy (I think she was a marchioness) came in because she was directly overseeing the investigation. The Duchess apologises for everything and says her son, husband and herself had no idea how lize knew of all this but no one believes that really.
With all this mess happening Edith goes outside to find Daniel. He was standing in a daze looking at the front door where the marchioness had disappeared. Edith thought the poor baby must be scared of all the guards so she brings him inside to rest and have some milk and cookies.
Marchioness sees the boy and gets suspicious again because Daniel was the same age as the boy lize bought and he also had blond hair. She thought it was another trick so she gets angry at Edith, "did you also bring in another boy to tell us he's my son?" but Edith says lady chill out I met this baby yesterday and he's innocent so back off (mama bear mode)
Daniel recognised his mother but hides behind Edith not wanting to face her (misunderstanding). Poor baby Daniel hides in Edith's arms but the marchioness grabs his collar to expose the back of his neck. And there it was, the butterfly shaped mark. Marchioness starts crying hugging the child because this was definitely her son. The boy denies it at first insisting that he's Daniel but then his mother faints and he can't lie anymore so he calls her 'mom' and starts crying.
The real boy was found and Catherine interrogates him personally. Johann tells everyone the truth about what happened 5 years ago when he was kidnapped. His aunt (mum's sister) was the one who'd kidnapped him and sold him as a slave. She told him that this is his mother's orders because his mom doesn't want him anymore and he should be a good boy and not come to find her again. The trauma was too deep and even after escaping from slavers he couldn't go find his family because he thought his mom sent him away. Aunt did this because she was jealous of her sister. Both the sisters loved the same man (emperor's brother) but the man chose her sister so she wanted to destroy her happy marriage.
The emperor is very happy a grants Edith a wish and she asks for lize's life to be spared (she was facing death sentence). She says that she might have found a fake boy and disgraced the imperial family but it's because of what she did, the marchioness came to the Rudwick mansion to investigate and found her real son. If that didn't happen then they'd have taken the real Johann to Rayzen without knowing anything. So please think of it as a god's grace and let her live.
The emperor stripped lize of her nobel title and the prenup is nullified and she's sent to the monestry to work for the rest of her life. Cliff is actually happy to get rid of her and thanked Edith for saving lize's life. He became severely depressed because of her and locked himself up in his room for months.
After everything was sorted out things became a little normal. Rudwick family didn't attend the National day and declined all invites. Killian and Edith were supposed to go back but they decided to stay for some time. Everything that lize had done had killed the spirits of the family. So Edith thought maybe being with their grandson will lift up their spirits. The Duke and Duchess became a lot more happier after spending time with baby Erdin.
Cliff invited Killian and Edith for tea and opened up about his feelings. He was drowning in guilt, self-blame, regret and sadness. He apologized to Edith for putting her in danger (that kidnapping arc). He said he deserves to be punished for blindly loving lize and not paying attention how abnormal his relationship with lize was.
He said he's not worthy of being the Duke and because he deserves to be punished he wanted Killian to take over the title. But Killian shuts him down immediately and gets hella mad at him for even suggesting that.
[[”l'm saying that it's better for you, Killian, to be the heir to the dukedom than for me, a flawed-"
"Shut up!" Killian snapped, cutting Cliff off before he could finish his sentence.
"l'm serious. You already have an heir and-"
"ls that the kind of punishment you're talking about, turning my life upside down at your whims Do you think the work that Edith and I are putting into Ryzen right now is so insignificant that it should be overturned because of your sentimental thoughts?"]]
Cliff apologises again to both of them for saying something so insensitive. They tell him if he feels so sorry about everything then he should start by making amends to mom and dad and make this dukedom stronger than it was before.
Edith encourages him to step out of Lize's shadow and try to think of a second marriage and give himself another shot at happiness. Because if he's any more late in creating an heir then it'll be a burden on mom dad and him. And afterall Rudwick family needs an heir.
Killian and Edith and their son return to their territory and there they have their daughter Lillia (or Lilly maybe?) They juggle life between Rayzen and capital cause they can't ignore the social circles completely and for their children's education.
Cliff remarried to a very different type of young lady than Lize. A viscount's daughter with dark chestnut hair, clear green eyes, a round face, and a gentle demeanor. She wasn't a great beauty, nor did she have any eye-catching charms, so there was quite a bit of gossip about their unexpected marriage at the time. She had a personality that put people at ease, and she was very wise. And most of all. she loved Cliff. Not as the heir to House Rudwick, but as Cliff himself. Cliff, too, was madly in love with her. It wasn't a burning love like he had with Lize, but that made it all the more "long and happy."
Lize kept causing trouble at the monestry still trying to act like a noble lady and behaved as if she'd lost her mind. But after she heard of Cliff's marriage she suddenly quieted down. And then lived out the rest of her life there without causing trouble.
And that's how it ended.
Thank youu so muchhhh for the detailed summary. I prefer this ending than the one in the manhwa because I never want Killian to succeed the dukedom. Them (novel) living in their managed territory seems like they are so muchh happier there. I also love how they had closure with Cliff. Also, Lize(author) getting humbled with her fucked up decisions was so satisfying, girypop literally bought her own downfall.
I hated how in the manhwa, the REAL Lize bears the consequence of what the Author did. She deserve to be free like the og Edith
I have mixed feelings about the manhwa.
Here they didn't mention an emperor and turned the emperor's brother into an evil man when in the novel he's a grieving father looking for his lost son for five years.
The knight was in the novel too but here he was substituted for the emperor's nephew.
I like the novel more because it was more realistic in my opinion. In the prison when lize frames Edith and everyone knows she's lying, the Duke and Duchess still don't punish her. Which is understandable because it's not possible to turn on your own child like a switch. They felt sorry for Edith and tried to make it right with gifts even if it was fucked up.
Cliff is not evil in the novel. He's obsessed with lize and he's also absolutely in love with her. When you read the novel you realise she manipulated him heavily and her control on him was absolute. He hurt Edith because of that and regretted it when he got his senses back.
When the author's control is gone the Duke and Duchess and Cliff still love her because of the years they'd spent loving her. She destroys that with her own actions and everyone is faced with the reality of what a monster they were keeping in their home. The depression that came because of that was realistic too. Cliff loses weight and becomes hollow inside trying to survive this marriage. The Duke and Duchess are also heavily impacted and realised that Edith was a far better daughter in law.
The arguments and tensions in their marriage was written very well and showed how Cliff was slowly losing himself and how painful this marriage was on him. She used to make him beg for crumbs of her love and then because of his obsession he married her. He thought he could finally have all her love and then Lize did a lot of things to hurt him deeply. That's why when lize is gone he feels relieved and lost but doesn't try to go after her like he did in the manhwa.
His true character is showed when he takes the initiative to apologise to Edith and thanks to her encouragement he ends up in a loving marriage too.
Killian and Edith go back to their territory and their people are very happy with them. The health insurance was a huge hit and so many people benefit from it in Rayzen territory. Everyone is very happy to have such a wonderful, kind, generous lord and lady looking after them. Edith grows her wings and becomes a total badass which was really enjoyable. She applies more modern world policies which help her people and she doesn't have to ask any nobel's permission. Killian supports all her decisions and they're like the best power couple.
The things that I do like in the manhwa is that the original Edith got a closure. She got to make peace with everything and even the other Edith's were able to get their revenge. So that's a plus. This whole arc of Cliff leaving to find lize was ridiculous. That man is still under her manipulation and his obsession is making him to all this.
But yeah over all novel was better.
thankyou for the summary!
Im agree the novel ending is better. but if they write it as it is, the manhwa would experience a change of FL, lol.
I mean the moment edith moved, the story is taken over by Lize and her antics. and it would take a lot of chapters, also.
but we still haven't get the conclusion of cliff in the manhwa.
Psychiatric ward. Immediately!
