"Happy" isn't the word I'm actually looking for. Not even "proud". I think "relieved" is the word. Though he couldn't say the safe word because of how he was feeling, it was a good indication that realized that there is, in fact, a limit!
Now the officers are being a bit incompetent because if you found someone nearly dying on the floor as a suspect rather than a victim, something's wrong. I can't even really understand their angle. But I guess they saw him as a scapegoat. The lamb to the slaughter.
