If you like psychological, messed up stories, here's one for you. Otherwise, please don't read it cause it'll be a waste of time for you and not be able to appreciate the story fully. There are warnings from both the tags and the comments, please don't bash a story or the author when they tried really hard, especially when they actually wrote the story that fulfills the criteria for the tags.
Minjae was dumb to think karma wouldn't bite him back in the ass, his childhood was sad and I get why he doesn't want to be involved in stuff that reminds him of his past, but apart from the scene where we see him dreaming and crying out sorry to Eunsung, we don't see him feel guilty at all, and so as pitiful as he may be, he's still at fault for Hyukjoon's pain and frankly, does deserve what was coming for him.
Eunsung did not deserve to die, especially because of a child's jealousy. Taehyun fell for the wrong dude, but he did rape Minjae (Where are his parents lmao). Also would've liked to see how he and Minjae started their physical relationship (it was mentioned, but to me it felt lacking that we didn't get to see their origin, would've been nice). Sunho deserves a lifetime of hugs after all that, he was only a mere catalyst in the rest of the characters' eyes. Taehyun only felt guilty for Sunho, but doesn't truly care for him. That chairwoman should go to jail for child abuse.
I thought it was kinda funny that Hyukjoon put in so much effort and even fucked his son's killer, it would've been much easier to just, you know, grieve. I don't think he really had time to grieve Eunsung or feel sorry for himself? I think the first thing he did was go in shock, denial, anger, then planned his revenge. That's the only way I could see him being able to think of something like this. Saw his suicide from a mile away. Hope he's doing well with his son now. But the lines, "But, now that I see your tears... it doesn't fill me with relief [...] I guess I loved you a lot more than I thought," plus the author's note, "someone who's consumed by hatred may grow to feel new emotions that make them hesitate on their path of revenge," "new emotions" may have referred to the love that Hyukjoon has grown towards Minjae, think it might have referred to the obsessive feelings of revenge that may have grown into some form of love (since it was BL, probably romantic, but for me I think it was in between familial love and romantic love)? I'm not sure, just that Hyukjoon unknowingly started to care for Minjae. But because Hyukjoon "chose revenge," as stated in the author's note, his yearning for revenge for his son was much stronger than whatever he felt for Minjae.
Also, through autopsy, they'd realize it was a suicide not a homicide, so Minjae wouldn't be sentenced to jail, maybe he'd be detained for a while, but other than that he wouldn't suffer any consequences apart from the pain of losing Hyukjoon. Hopefully Taehyun can afford a psychologist/psychiatrist for Minjae so he can get his shit together. Yes, Minjae was a jerk to Taehyun, and even acknowledged that he treated Taehyun poorly, but he really has no one to lean on anymore (we don't see any other person call out to Minjae after they started as student teachers, so this is only an assumption, though I think it's safe to say no one else is close to either of them), and really he just needs therapy. Actually, scratch that, they all need therapy. But the story was well executed, the characters were all sympathetic, Minjae too (if you dig deeper and read thoroughly), personally, even to the point where I could empathize with them, and I would definitely recommend it if you wanna see angsty stuff with a bittersweet ending.
Summary of this rant: honesty and communication is the key to a stablr relationship. Moving on is healthy. Don't disrespect the author.
I have mixed feelings about this one. For me, I could feel the pain from both sides. Yoo Il finally realized that this relationship is toxic, that Se Woong was being controlling of him. The last chapter, I interpreted as Yoo Il in his new relationship, now facing the same thing as Se Woong did in their relationship, and understands why Se Woong did all those stalkerish actions. You can see Yoo Il being curious about his new boyfriend's phone, but he chose a different path, to not be insecure, not repeat Se Woong's mistakes, and not be hung up on the past. And that I think is extremely realistic and healthy for Yoo Il, I'm glad that even though he can't forget, he moved on from that scarring experience and is now trying hard to make himself happy in this relationship by being honest and understanding.
I think that Se Woong had no one to be there for him, 30 years is a long time. He had another chance at love, and I think that his feelings for his first love eventually got confused with the feelings for Yoo Il, and I still don't know if he was dead or not, as his suicide attempts failed, showing his cowardice, but it was because the story shifted to Yoo Il's point of view in the epilogue, we never do understand what happened to Se Woong. Se Woong in the end, regrets his actions, I think the author tried to imply that Se Woong finally understands that what he did was wrong, and even if it's in human nature, he shouldn't have done that. The last we see of him is him wishing he could go back to the beginning and restart, but he knows it's impossible. Now all he has left are memories, and a single photo.
I think the author did the right thing with the epilogue, even though we never see Se Woong end up happy, he at least reflected on his actions, and that was something everyone should do. I hope that Se Woong finds help, so that he can move on and find happiness by being independent, without needing to control everything and let go of his insecurities. Yoo Il choosing the right thing shows that he grew from his previous relationship, that he has learned to be upfront about the issues, and to understand the other person for his sake and his boyfriend's sake. I think that Yoo Il became a much more complex character, as a human should. This realistic ending isn't something everyone can like, as a happy ending is much more widely accepted, but my interpretation of the moral of the story is that moving on from your first love may be hard, that being honest about your insecurities is hard, but in the long term, it's worth it for your happiness.
Really just goes to show communication is key in any healthy relationship. This work made me cry for both Se Woong and Yoo Il, they both have been through an emotional rollercoaster. But this relationship would have never worked out with Yoo Il having lost his trust in Se Woong and Se Woong with his constant insecurities. I'm just glad the author didn't choose the toxic route where they both ended up together.
To those who are confused about the end/think the ending was too rushed:
I just read the author's note on the original Chinese version, and it's only the end of season 1. The author confirmed that there will be a season 2 comeback, but there is not specified date. So for those who are emotionally invested into this story, it's not over!
Here's the link where I found the author's note (Scroll to the bottom to see the author's note in simplified Chinese):

From the previous comments, and a lil google search, there was the Great Kanto earthquake on September 1st, 1923 (Tokyo-Yokohama Earthquake) and caused an estimate of 140,000 deaths.
Tokyo and Yokohama are very close to each other on the map. So yeah, Kiyo and Ozaki were probably affected. However, since Kitsune can only die from certain things*, Ozaki most likely survived the earthquake.
The Japanese school year ends in March. Since Kiyo started school in 1920, he would graduate in 1923 March and start looking for a job in Tokyo to stay with Ozaki.
September 1st, 1923 in the Japanese Calendar is a Saturday (I think it's the same calendar globally but my dumbass searched Japanese calendar just in case). The earthquake started 11:58 pm.
Since Kiyo graduated and probably found a job/is looking for a job, he should be working normal work hours and presumably, at that time, is at home with Ozaki (in bed cuddling/doing the you know -u-). So even if the earthquake affected their area, Ozaki sensed the earthquake (Remember, he's a Kitsune and has fox senses, so he probably could hear the earthquake even in his sleep) and protected Kiyo.
One of the comments mentioned that Ozaki looked sad in the extra for Chapter 5, but that was in 1922, before the earthquake. Again, I don't know whether or not the Author deliberately set this manga right before the earthquake, but in my mind, Kiyo did not die and continued to live on with Ozaki (preferably forever but the author just HAD to bring up the fact that Kiyo will die in 30 - 40 years I'm not crying you are).
*I tried searching up how Kitsune can die. There were a variety of answer, from cutting off all its tails, starvation, taking away its hoshi no tama, etc. I didn't know which one was right but I just assume Ozaki was pretty much invincible hehe.
Omg are you kiyo irl, because you're very curious and doing a research over a manga haha jk. I love your analysis though
Your comment has resurrected my soul thank you for doing all that research and then sharing it with us!
