This question comes up fairly frequently and yet I have never seen anyone ask whether Akihito has ever said "I love you" to Asami.

It's interesting, isn't it? Everyone is looking to Asami to make that declaration.

Now that I think about it. Yes it is interesting.

But didn't Akihito say he wanted to stay by asami's side? That's why we went through the whole thing with him leaving Asami for 3 days and ending up in that jail cell.

So many thing happen to Akihito it's hard to keep track of.

That wasn't "I love you," though and not said to Asami. So far, neither of them have made a direct declaration to each other. As close as Akihito gets to it is in chapter 50 when he tells Asami he doesn't want to give up on him/their relationship (even that part isn't clear.) Asami has actually made more of these sorts of statements with all of the "You are mines" "You belong to mes" and such. But these threads come up because people want to hear those three specific words--usually from Asami. But the point is that neither of them have yet said it.

"You are mine" and "You belong to me" aren't really all that romantic^^ (at least to me)...I think the closest thing to a confession I've heard from Asami was on the ship at the end of the Hong Kong arc when he said "Don't toss my heart around any more than this".

No more romantic than "I want to stay by his side." But the line you bring up was directly said from Asami to Akihito, so for all everyone complains about Asami not communicating his feelings, he was actually more open than Akihito--up until chapter 50, where Akihito says he doesn't want to give up. But even that wasn't as direct as "Don't toss my heart around." (I also think it's important to read the translator notes there and then the official English translation. You get the feeling the scanlation translators pumped that line up a little bit and the intent may not have been quite as romantic as we would like it to be.)

But we come back to the original question and the fact that neither of these two has directly said anything remotely like "I love you" to the other and that both are keeping much of their feelings to themselves and not communicating openly.

I agree that chapter 50 was a big step from Akihito's side...It was like one big love confession, only missing those three words everyone seems to be waiting for, but to be honest, I think it was spelled out clear enough.
You mean they pumped the tossing his heart around line up? Or what Akihito said to Asami?

But yeah, none of them actually confessed in the way most people want to hear it. And they do have major communication issues. We'll see how it all turns out...

Probably...Then again, you can also interpret that as need to control, which doesn't necessarily involve romantic feelings. I think many people just want a plain and open confession that can't be misunderstood or interpreted differently by the characters or the readers in any way. Dunno. xD

That's an interesting theory. At the same time though, I don't think Asami's really all that controlling over Aki. He has a PI follow him around (more for Aki's safety than anything I think), but he basically lets him do whatever he wants. He only asked him to start calling him every day after Aki disappears for days and comes back all beat up. I feel like that's more care and than control, but it could be open to interpretation, I guess, depending on what kind of person you think Asami is. ╮(￣▽￣)╭ Either way, I think they're in it for the long haul, even if "I love you" never gets spoken.

Anybody can say "I love you". It's just words. People say it all the time without meaning it (I think I heard this line once in a movie).

Asami-- a man of few words but many actions.

You know, what you wrote got me thinking and I just remembered something...I don't know if any of you have seen Brokebak Mountain, but they didn't say "I love you" once in that movie, and yet I don't think anyone would argue those two were deeply in love. I understand if people are looking for confirmation in black and white, but those words are definitely not the only way to convey love. :)

The original phrase doesn't employ or even necessarily imply anything to do with the heart. That seems to be something of a leap on the part of the translators. The English correlation to "Don't toss me around" is probably closer to something like "Don't upset me/Don't scare me." And indeed, the English book translation gives it as "Don't distress me like this again."

Yes, to be distressed or upset implies a certain depth of feeling but not quite the hearts and flowers of "Don't toss my heart around."

I see...Well, for me the power of that scene came both from the fact that Asami showed expression on his face and, similar to what you said, that Akihito being kidnapped had that much an impact on him/"tossed him around" like that at all. Even if you take the heart aspect out of it, that scene is probably still the one where he was closest to being honest with his feelings.

Now that I think about it, I agree completely.
