I just binged this I can't help but notice the resmeble toward middle eastern countries and nation kanakta (where kalia from) and it's painted in barbaric light. I might dropped this story for this reason, I might be overreacted but I feel like people of color are never painted in good way in fansty manhaw
I haven't read this but poc- or any foreigners really, are generally seen as dangerous, scary, uncultured, and possibly even "barbaric" as you said in some asian countries like Japan, Korea and China. And I think it has to do with their extreme lack of diversity issues- which from what I have seen, it seems they are more than happy to keep.
Yeah I’ve seen that happens in a lot of Manhwa where they mention foreign countries, that are more commonly middle eastern based/coded. They’re always the country with a strong military, antagonist characters, spies that are sent to kill characters from the main nation etc. It’s honestly super frustrating that it’s the only representation POC get in this type of media. Even when the story is in a middle eastern based country, the main characters tend to be white and the servants are darker poc and if not white they are usually just tan.
It seems to me like they are basing this more on a European pov. Through out history asian cultures have seen each other as nomadic or not. But not really barbaric since they traded with each other from china to Africa and all across India. However the ones that persieve other cultures as as barbaric, or of lesser importance has always be white Europeans. So if they are basing the kingdom and people off of white Europeans then yes everyone but them are barbarians. Unless your Japanese and then the whole world is filled with nothing but classless barbaric people. (Jokingly said the japanese person posting)
Honestly that's eastern Asia. I always cringe when mangas describe a beautiful woman as a milky skinned and tanned skin as ugly. A lot of people like to defend it based on their history of slavery and slaves tend to have darker skin due to being out in the sun. However when you see how the present people of color in media, you still see that racism. That's what happens when a country is lacking diversity, their mindset is more narrow but they may like it that way. ┐( ˘_˘)┌
