I think you still should keep in mind he lost them once before so of course he’s going to act that way towards a stranger whose intentions aren’t obvious. He knows what they all will have to face eventually so he won’t hesitate to do anything that will get them stronger as quickly as possible. I kinda see his reactions as reasonable and I like this compared to a different manga with a similar premise that the damn cultivator will kill people just because they don’t know his name and it’s so fucking dumb, I wish the girl he likes would put him in his place but looks like she’s become nothing more than a damsel in distress character and nothing more. Anyway Nie Li just keeps his guard up all the time cause he knows what it’s like to not have them around anymore and it was hellish for him, though it was only shown subtly, his shameless personality stems from all that.
