I don't have an explanation for his actions here (since the spoilers I read didn't cover this specific scene), but I think Daniel's just using himself as an example here.
The spoilers I do have involve Mildred and Daniel investigating the artist to make sure the painting's price won't plummet from a scandal. And some nobleman preventing Mildred's husband's body from being returned, so she can't be declared a widow, and won't receive his death benefits, trying to dry up the rest of her money so he can force her into selling her home (I think?)
But yeah, a lot of stuff happens to them for trying to keep their house, so I think Daniel's just asking to get smacked, he doesn't actually mean to hurt their family.
