I think it could have been a translation issue, other scans used “them” to when Ai introduced Ren to Kaname

japanese language has "neutral" words used for both genders. and translations teams instead of using words like it or them, they jump assuming the gender and use he/she. this is a common problem that confuses a lot of readers.
