for this story? if you wanted the drama, Mophead leaving suddenly would be enough. Enough time passes, the MC with his personality would hate that he was abandoned without a word. He already has abandonment issues so leaning into the mental health part of the story would give it a lot more depth and oomph.
Smut right before s1 ends? EASY. They have consensual sex (the best sex of MC's life so far we'll say) which they've done before several times and the next day ML's gone without a trace. MC feels pump and dumped but is conflicted bc he still likes and wants ML.
shittt you could even up the drama by having the loan sharks find him on the island and a Big Dramatic Scene where he runs away and the timing is just SO suspicious, could it have been ML who ratted him out?!
