Uncontrollable fear will only lead to unreasonableness and cowardice, worse yet... it could also lead you to refuse the surrounding reality.
What about atheist people? For better or worse, they don't believe in the existence of god, but they might believe that there is something holding the power that controls the human.

I mean, I did meet some ghost and genies at some point of my youth, and there are also many illogical phenomena occurring around us; let's say someone near you is an indigo, or esper... what is their difference from witch? some people tho, especially science people will reject anything that could not be explained through reason and calculation, even when there's a saying: seeing is believing, they just turn blind eye to that.
