We are generally used to the whole 'love triangle' situation. This author is a good one. She can totally do a flip and do something new with the character other than the generic stuff.

About the girl falling quick she did say in her thoughts that people tended not to notice her, so I think a good bit of it is naivety of the world and not really talking to boys much so feelings like this didn’t really develop, and her perception of boys her age were restricted to her childhood friend who picked on her.
