Hello Everyone, I recently discovered that my mom likes Yaoi and im confused, i always thought that i have the coolest mom in the world, she is super nice, likes videogames, anime and manga, when she is free we watch anime movies toghether, but today i accidentally discovered her secret, she has hidden tons of yaoi manga, i think that even my dad doesnt know this, my mom is a nearly 40 years old woman is it strange that she likes these genre? after all i think thar only young women read this kind of manga, i dont like these genre, i know that in these page there are a lot of readers that likes it, what do you girls thinks of my mom, i cant tell any of my friends about it, its embarasing.

its completely normal :) hobbies and interests shouldnt be restricted to a certain age. i think its just the fact that reading yaoi is not socially excepted. of course it is gathered towards a younger audience but so is young adult fiction and i see a lot of middle-aged women enjoying that. its just a fantasy, a get-away. so dont be worried! also it sounds like your mom is still young at heart. age is just a number anyways.

Well.... I can understand the confusion at first. But if you think about it, isn't it great in its own way? You're a fine bred legacy in a line of fujoshis (๑•ㅂ•)و✧ lmao
Joking aside. It's not that weird you know. Do the calculations. When your mom was in her teens which is the 90s Ai no Kusabi the original was the hype yaoi and that's already one of the prime hall of famers of the yaoi community. Okane ga nai too. Lots of good yaoi started in the 90s. Not to mention all the mangas. Then come early 2000s fujoshi are not so rare anymore in the community.
Fujoshis thrive in the dark after all. Nothing so much of a shame really. I mean, sure it's not something that could be shared with friends but if you ever find the courage to talk to her about it, just think of all the fun you both could have by talking about likes and dislike and genre types and 'Gods, mom ______ is the seme/uke not the other way around!'

I’ll probably end up like your mum. 40+ reading the occasional inappropriate manga. I never thought highly of people like myself, until I ended up becoming like that and I can’t seem to part ways with manga like that. I never thought of myself as perverted and gross but I think the reason I enjoy reading it is because of the blossoming love. There’s something pure and admirable about it. Sure, I was ashamed of myself but I honestly don’t care if people know about my ideals now. The only real opinions that truly matter to me are my family’s and they’re fine with it. After all, I’m still me.

The only reason older women don’t read yaoi as much is because they’re not as internet savvy (in general)

Its not weird. I read them and im 37 *sigh* yes im an old lady compaired to you. Anyways ive read bi and gay romance since my early 20s when i stumbled into a m/m/f story that was good. I also had read hetero romance since the age of 12; got tired of reading kids books and grabbed a adult novel cause the cover was cute, ends up it was a romance novel. Moving on to manga was a natural progression once i caught up on my favorite authors and ran out of good storys to read. A lot of them remind me of my youth since plenty of the ones that are translated where writen around the times i was a teen or young 20 something (i can tell by the phones, pagers, and other pop culture clues in some of them) Anyways we all have our hobbies. And their is no shame to my game. If nothing else it shows she might be open minded since shes ok with that kind of story.

I think you probably find it weird because of the sex part. Yes, a lot of yaoi manga have good stories, but we cannot deny that most of the famous title have sex in it. And it's weird to think about sex and our parents, not because of age, but because they are our parents.
But first, they are people and people are allowed to have any hobby they want, even if it's relationed to porn. Your dad probably have a collection of erotic movies or playboy magazine and it's fine. He's a human, he can have fantasies.
Don't worry too much, your mom likes what she likes and you have no right to say it's right or wrong. If you wanna talk to her about it, ask what she likes and how she discover yaoi, it's fine. If you feel uncomfortable, just forgets about it. It's fine, it's a hobby like any other hobby.
