Whilst the plot is nothing jaw-dropping, the characters are well written and more than just plot devices. The world and time period is established well, with accuracies in art. It is simple and not anything revolutionary, even if the concept is a bit unique, but the quality is consistent throughout the story and the pacing stable. These factors help bring what could have been a poorly executed, sloppy, riffraff of a BL, to an easy-read, intriguing classic instead.
