The problem is, in our western culture there's a sharp border in value between humans and everything else alive. In Buddhist culture, no such thing: every living creature's worth any other. Plants, animals, people, it's all the same, it's life. And The reincarnating theory makes the idea of shape-shifting to loook much less weird to them.
