On the contrary, the word was used as an insult especially in the 80s toward people who like manga and anime and were indeed bullied if people in school found out so the word is not viewed in a positive light. Japan doesn’t discriminate against people who enjoy anime or (even bl in some communities) as you can CLEARLY see that when you visit japan anime is much much celebrated there especially among the the younger people and mangakas are well respected and called “sensei” for that manner.
