I dont really like this. Probably because how manipulative Shouji is. He spoiled Niki until he doesn't know how to stand on his own and suddenly abandoned him without any clear motive. Isn't it better if he tell Niki that he love him in the first place? Idk probably being abandoned is my ultimate fear that it made the story quite unsettling for me.
Well I think at first Shouji was just trying to comfort a friend who lost his cousin and then it just became a habit. And then when he has understood what he has done, Shouji decided it was best to leave so Niki can try to become independent again. Also I think Shouji thinks that Niki doesn't even know what love is, thats why he didnt confess
