Okay, here we go. The manhwa could have a different ending than the novel, but I’ll be talking about the novel here. And I didn’t read the novel btw. I’ve just read a biiig summary in japanese, that I’m summarizing into this spoil.
This is tagged as « Romance », just as the novel. But y’all have to know it’s actually not a romance one. It’s wayyy more than that, for the first time in that kind of isekai there’s NO ML. We’re just gonna see the character growing up, and I’m actually so happy because of that ヾ(☆▽☆) We all like romance but dang, it’s about HER, SHE’S growing up, without the need of a boyfriend and that’s just amazing. Anyways let’s really start with the spoil now
So, as we saw, the MC will die. A magician will make Keira return to the past, ‘cause she’s « the real one ».
> The real villain of the story isn’t Cosette. It’s the dad, what an @sshole (But he’s hella hot. Still hate him af tho, but ugh why does he kinda look like Claude, and why does Cosette kinda looks like Athy, it makes me even more angry and confused. Don’t make them look like thiiis)
>>> When Keira died ; The dad will help the magician, because of his guilt (? or maybe just because he realized SHE was the real one loved by spirits. A trashy reason for a trash, it makes sense to me.)
>> There’s a thing about the dad being hypnotized, I didn’t really understood that part. But it’s not really important, cause he DID a lot of things, and killed Keira even though he knew she was his daughter (he knew it and wasn’t hypnotized. He still voted to kill her, I’m not sure why but he probably didn’t care since Cosette had the power, and so they thought she was loved by the spirits, « she have power so I don’t need you, just die » grrr)
When the MC returns to the past, the dad start to have some nightmares (of the futur, when he kill his own daughter and all. When he wakes up, he don’t really remember the nightmare and only remember the pain (be in pain yeah, you killed her you trash. And that’s not the only thing he did btw.)
-> Actually, the truth is that he never did directly something, like Cosette. (Well, he voted to kill his daughter, but he didn’t plot or anything) But the thing is that his action, his being, made sooo many people suffer. He destroyed everyone close to him. HE caused everything.
His first wife, for exemple. He watched her being insulted, abused, and never stood to her or said anything, which made the abuse even worst.
> The abuse was done by the family of the second wife, the mother of Keira.
He never said anything, ignored it all. And even when the family of the second wife hired assassins to kill the first one, he didn’t do anything, didn’t say anything, while he knew everything.
The first wife was slandered of being infertile (while she wasn’t). She was pregnant, of Cosette (Which means that yeah, Cosette is a real daughter too. That’s why she looks so much like the dad). And in her situation, to save her baby, she made a contract with a Demon, offering her soul to protect her baby and take revenge of the Parvis family (the one Keira came from), but what she didn’t knew is that she was pregnant of twins (a girl, Cosette, and a boy) >> I’m not sure about this part. The summary does talk about twins (« I didn’t know they were twins ») ; it’s either about the babies, so Cosette and a boy, or about the mother and her brother (cause she do have a brother, we’ll talk about it after)
The Demon took possession of the body of the first wife, and by doing so, killed the baby (Cosette). So actually, Cosette never lived, she was dead from the start ; which complete the prophecy, saying that only ONE daughter is the saintess.
Now, about Cosette (well, it’s not really her. It’s the Demon, in her body, while she’s dead (while she actually was never born alive), controlling the divine spirit ; that’s a little bit confusing. It’s not really clear if Cosette stole the spirit when Keira successfully invoked it and could control it because of her royal blood, or if it’s just the magic of the demon, and actually Cosette never had the water spirit ; Keira had it, but was so shocked that she saw Cosette using her magic (that look just like the spirit), that she never thought she successfully invoked it. She thought Cosette had it and so never awoken her power. It’s one of them either way, but I think it’s the second one, not sure tho this part is so confusing.
Now, the brother of the first wife ; he’s the only one of their family that survived. He wants to take revenge of the Parvis family, just like his sister. He’s the one who introduced Cosette, and he also made a contract with a Demon. In the first futur, their revenge was successful when Keira died, and life turned into Hell (must be why the magician and father returned to the past where Keira was alive)
In this timeline, the father’s way too different. Not as cold, wants to be treated as a father (a b/tch I’m saying, grrr)
The ending ; okay, now let’s talk about how different it’ll of what you expect
I know you expect her to be with a boy, and her father loving her. It’s not. Not at all.
As I said, there’s no ML ; no Romance as we know it. But she’s loving herself. Taking care of herself. Romance with herself lmao
>> She and her brother COMPLETELY cut ties with their father. They’re gonna explore the world, which they could never did (they were kinda locked up in the house since their childhood, because of their father.) It’s not like WMMAP or any manhwa where they end up liking their toxic father and all.
I seriously find it beautiful. Way more « realistic », isn’t it ? I kinda always hoped for an isekai/return to the past where the girl doesn’t live for love u know ? Where she lives for herself. And there it is. (there is some not about romance, but the MC is always a boy. Now we have some THIS same style, but with an heroine that really do it for herself you know ? She find herself, her own happiness which doesn’t imply a boy or a love life ; just her, and her brother, after cutting tie with the toxicity in her life)

This room? Old.
The prince? Used.
Pregnancy? Over it.
Your face? Ruined it.
Your life? Destroyed it.
And these are not a threat.
I will throw the old, change the used, ruin and destroy your life that you carelessly lent to me. This is no longer your show. This is my time to shine. Lol.

ik this ain’t ever gnna happen but im ngl if there were ever a dark plot twist where jeanette turns full on villainess mode with a whole badass glow-up by magic or some sick sh*t + sprinkle some IQ points- yknow i’d def be rooting for her.
i mean she has more than enough potential to. girl’s whole background story is literally abt being lied, manipulated, used as a sh*tty dispensable tool by the adults for their nasty royal political play. ion gonna explain it further here, y’all can read more abt it by digging deeper in the cmmt section. nobody f*cking loves her- and i mean genuinely. most of it is just weak-as pity and commutual feelings of familial/friendly obligation.
im legit losing brain cells reading high defenders of the whitehair kid. what he did was UNCALLED for, it was unnecessary pathetic and lousy. he grew up with her, she basically regards him as an older brother. looks up to him like he some war saviour. f*cking family. some preach he did it to draw a line, to ensure she realises her place, justifies that what he did was some strong knightly sh*t because it in a way helps her to not get any hopes up.
No. what he did was smth far worst than anything remotely physical. most r just looking at the surface level. he f*cking destroyed her sense of worth, her self-esteem, her beliefs as someone who deeply cares for like a blood relative.
someone you love- whether platonically or romantically- someone you have always fully trusted and as blood family, just outwardly declaring that you’re not worthy of being his most important. that there’s someone else who is being prioritised, that there’s no time for you right now.
he might as well say “if a situation where athy or you were in danger & only one could be saved, ever presented itself.. srry but f*ck you. we knew each other for years, ur practically like my sister & ik you love me but f*ck you. you understand, right? no hard feelings”
he’s not stupid. actually it’s the opposite, you see his knowing eyes, he knows exactly what he did and done. and I see some cmmts presuming that he had thought of this for a long time alrdy so it’s okay to say it. that’s WORST
jeanettes not some clingy baby who craves for his attention; in fact she’s more attracted to athy than him anyways. she has never intervened in his actions involving athy.
his words were short but made an irreversible impact. an impact that may not have been direct and may not have produced any visible effects as of now, but those words will forever gnaw at her. they will forever be engraved inside her as a stern remainder that she is not someone welding the significance she thought she had. that she’ll always be 2nd place, or 3rd or 5th. it would make her question who she rlly is or ever was to him, dwell on their present relationship. he didn’t need to scream or shout it out. it’s almost sinister how calmly he said it. no hesitation whatsoever.
those words could’ve acted as a trigger. smth that may change deeply inside her through the subconscious mind. a click. an almost perfect opportunity to turn a “sweet, innocent & naive” kid into a smth much darker. and on top of that, after learning the real truth of her existence.. at that point:
f*ck athy with her daddy issues. f*ck tsundere 24/7 half-naked claude. f*ck grandpa magician. f*ck droopy eyes and his overdue residence in the friendzone. everyone can f*ck the f*ckity f*ck off
however, don’t sweat jeanette haters, ejizikiel enthusiasts, athy/lucas thirsters and the like. my soldiers. no need to get ur panties in a twist. unclench ur fists. drop ur pitchforks. we all know author-nim would never ever ever do such a horrid thing, to pull of such an unthinkable twist! calm. you’ll get ur standard mc happy ending, jeanette WILL always stay as a side character- as she should be: easily forgettable but there to titter the plot when needed.
all just for good fun.
...but in a parallel world and a better universe, where such happens. im the 1%.

also mc: has not done anything that reflects intelligence or perception
the princess of shu is like those isekai manga villain where she was poised, graceful, calm and smart where the mc is the typical villainess that gets on everybodys nerve. well i guess having this kind of switched roles is okay. the mc herself has depth into her character, but not the way she was initially introduced so i was a bit thrown off to see what shes becoming

I really like Somi, and I want to support her because of her personality. I get where she's coming from, and she has the right to get annoyed at Naru. He's her boyfriend but he almost doesn't seem to realise that. She's probably tried her best to put up with Sungjoon because he makes Naru happy, but unless she's willing to talk to Naru, then I don't see this conflict being resolved.
I can understand Sungjoon because he likes Naru in a society where there's stigma towards this kind of thing. I think, if anything, he's scared, which pushes him to make decisions that are, in the end, manipulative and generally not too nice. Perhaps if he were in an environment where he could be more open, then the story would have developed very differently. This is where I personally relate to him most, and that is why, even though he's a lil shit, I want him to be happy.
Naru is a fricking idiot, and he can be quite oblivious. He's extremely likeable IMO, but the way that he approaches things is quite insensitive. He's not thought of the possibility that Somi would dislike being around sungjoon, and he's way more attached to sungjoon than he knows. I can understand that he'd want Somi to tell him about her dislike for sungjoon as soon as she could, as he seems to be aware of his obliviousness to a certain degree. He needs to buck up and figure out a solution as he's the main character.
Ultimately, I just want all of them to be happy, no matter the couple pairing. and character development. that would be nice.
2020-05-08 09:45 marked

Well, what can I say? Somi has some guts and a very sharp gut feeling. Despite promising to to interfere that's basically all Sungjoon does. And his reason is what frightens me the most. I mean, Naru had a terrible experience as a child and has been desperately trying to overcome it as much as he could. But Sungjoon seems to be enjoying the fact Naru couldn't overcome it completely, and he keeps isolating Naru in misery. Like, all those discouraging words that no one will even understand Naru - what the hell? Sungjoon doesn't want Naru to grow as a person at all. I've seen something similar in real life, and it's terrifying to the core, it can distort even a normal person's sense of perception let alone someone as disturbed as Naru. So I can totally relate to Somi's terror in this situation.
Even Naru himself has admitted he needs to grow into an independent person (yet keeps wallowing in sorrow at his own convenience). I thought the neighbour guy would lit a spark in Naru (not meaning anything romantic here, although later on the author might tie them into a relationship later on)... doesn't seem the to be the case, at least, not now. Sora's boyfriend is right: Naru doesn't quite grasp the meaning of being in a relationship, he just likes the idea of him being in a relationship as it makes him seem normal. But that's just using another person in your interests... although he seems to genuinely like Somi, so he needs to work on his part a bit more. And Some also needs time to figure him out, he's some demanding fellow.
But I start seeing glimpses of what the author is slowly driving at. And I don't quite like what I see.

I feel like this is likely to go down the route of "Oh, he was just misunderstood~" Or, "Oh deary me, his childhood was sad. He doesn't know how to act like a decent human being!!"
Blegh! Get that trash out of here. He neglected her for two years, and yet he has the audacity to get jealous when she so much as looks at another guy, this case in point her own guard who is likely the only actual companion she has in that stinky palace. What a fucking tool. She's not an object. She a Queen who's beautiful and smart as hell who is out there finding solutions for problems. While ML is just locked in his office being a sad sack with a protective group of followers licking his wounds cause it's probably going to turn out later that oh no his father treated him like shit. Oh no, he's being compared to shadow of another person or some other 'oh no pity him ' 'reason.' And all will be forgiven cause he is 'cute'.
Okay. I'm done. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. Hmu if you want to rant about shitty MLs with me thx.

So it's revealed that the "angel" isn't even the mistress but just a girl that Hubert sees as a little sister (which is why he was so ANGRY when Opal mistook her for a mistress, but seriously wtf did he expect). Opal even dryly mentions that no sane legal wife would put up with a non-blood related girl buzzing around the husband with the support of the "ride or DIE for our OTP" servants & when Hubert has to remarry after the divorce, his fiancee is immediately like "get rid of her NOW".
Hubert goes to Opal for advice on how to deal with this "overly headstrong" fiancee, but Opal's just like "why should I care, we have no relations with each other -sips tea-"
Hubert: but we were married for 7 years.
Opal: and now we're not. so again, why should I care about YOUR issues?
PRE-DIVORCE:
So Opal exiles herself to the attic to keep away from the obnoxious household staff (& Hubert) only to find during her readings that there is serious embezzlement going on in the duchy's finances. Hubert, being a colossal naive entitled only child, wholeheartedly believed in his staff & didn't check ANYTHING they sent him.
Turns out one of them has serious gambling issues - even when Opal brings this up to Hubert (with evidence), he's just like "you're an evil villainous whore, you probably made all that up to steal from my finances & take it over, how dare you accuse my loyal servant!!!"
Opal's just like "fuck this" & books it back to her parents' place, lays down what happened & they basically devise a simple plan to take over the duchy's finances in one blow so that Opal will now hold the power (since she can't divorce him - it'll just worsen her already horrible rep).
So Opal has a document forged & smuggled over saying that all the moneys AND properties now belong to her. And Hubert signs it.
Opal: "Btw if you kill me or if I die, it'll all just go to charity instead~".
Hubert throws a tantrum but he's beaten down by her logic (& also because she has all the power) & he finally calms down enough that he starts working hard for 7 years until he's able to buy back all his territory from her piece by piece.
He confesses to her that he fell in love with her & wants to marry her for real, but she rejects him.
I think he said something sappy about their first dance at their wedding but all Opal could remember was the fact that he accused her of being a whore right afterwards. And she says that to him.:blob_patpat:
POST-DIVORCE:
So Hubert's been bumped up to a B- rank in terms of male leads & that's mostly because he actually denies the rumors still floating in high society of her being a whore & actually tried to do something about them - making clear what the reason of their divorce was for (aka it wasn't because she cheated on him).
.....But later he gets jelly of her closeness with BFF & insinuates that she cheated on him & Opal's just like "why are you so disappointing....BFF's been out of the country for YEARS even before I married you."
BFF's the exiled prince of a neighboring country (hiding out as a baron's son) so he went back to reclaim his homeland & also to be a worthy man of Opal (but rip, she got married before that could happen - he's still putting down civil unrest & antagonistic factions even 7 years later). He respects Opal 100%, but sadly his friends don't.
They immediately believe the rumors of her being a whore & make comments to her why she's acting like she's not experienced with "those types of things" when she makes an offhand comment at a party they're all at.
Opal straight up tells them (politely) to fuck off & that she doesn't care if they don't like her, she'll stay out of their way & vice versa. BFF shows up & he's pretty disappointed in his friends, especially since they were acquainted with her a bit before the party started.
She might have dumped wine on them, I forget if she did.
Anyway, later she heads to the foreign country with BFF to support him but gets kidnapped by an anti-BFF faction & they lock her in an attic for now, saying that they'll spread rumors (since she a slut) that she ran off with another man in order to shake BFF's conviction.
Opal: how dumb do you think he is
Bad guys: it doesn't matter if he believes it or not, other people will
And that's where the raws end I think? With her stuck in the attic for now.
Bonus with the maid who bullied Opal the most - she ends up being kicked out of Hubert's household for getting pregnant (Opal: ..... *even more disappointed in Hubert*). Hubert talks about it like it's all the maid's fault & Opal's just like *men never take responsibility for their actions.....he could at least tracked down the father & not just kicked her out immediately.....*. Turns out she was swindled by a nobleman's son who promised to make her his wife (he did this with a lot of women). Opal is running a women's shelter & is trying to push forward women's rights (since she knows what it's like to suffer from misogyny after being denounced a slut for defending herself against a would-be rapist), tracks down the maid & offers to take her & her bastard baby in to one of the shelters.
Out of guilt (& some small bits of pride), the maid keeps refusing to impose on Opal until Opal's just like "listen I don't care about YOU, I care about your kid. You gonna let an innocent baby starve because of your incompetence?".
Opal gets testimonies from the maid & other women while BFF is gathering other evidence (nobleman's son was connected to some major bandit attacks along a highway so this is 2 birds with 1 stone). Together they destroy him in public, have him arrested for both charges & Opal finally gets the maid to realize that her child's father was 100% lying the whole time. Maid finally accepts to be taken into the women's shelter & thanks Opal repeatedly.

And that’s true , abuse is not something to feel embarrassed about, nor ashamed because your scars show your strength. The abused should NEVER be at fault . It’s the abusers fault , he/she are the ones who should feel ashamed and embarrassed for preying on a weaker or younger person.

I suppose there must be lots of people who love seeing female characters becoming fancy and "ladylike," and that's why this is in here.
Personally, I feel that, if you're creating any world you want for your MC to end up in, it's really boring and backward to create one where your strong, intelligent, naturally-attractive-just-as-she-is MC has to learn to adhere to various conventions and restrictions for women. It's worse (in my opinion) because the ways it's presented and the amount of time spent on it implies that she is lacking if she can't conform to these things and that learning to wear impractical dresses, heels and a corset and to follow restrictive conventions is somehow empowering her.
I mean, fine if you want your character to have challenges in the new world, but you could make this world anything you like, and you choose to make it one where your naturally strong, graceful-natured and intelligent character gets put back in the box women fought long and hard to be free of. Like it's a good thing.
I'm not having a go at anyone who does enjoy seeing characters get blinged-up and dance around it pretty dresses. I'm just disappointed personally because it's the opposite of what I originally liked about this story. Along with a few other things, it seems to be turning into the kind of manga I avoid.
