I was the same as you; I wasn't really into novels and I skipped MDZS because it didn't seem promising but oh boy, I missed out on A LOT. I read the manhua first, then watched the donghua (anime), then the drama, and then I read the novel. The novel is amazing, it goes deeper in depth about the situations and conflicts upon each era. You should really read the novel!
