As a fan of bdsm, I enjoyed the spank and tears. I see no wrongs with how they went about the play. A safe word is usually never established in shit quality bdsm stories. At least they got it right here. And the tone of this play is pretty non-serious, it's hardly even a play.
But I can see how it can be "out of character" to suddenly establish this dynamic when s&m wasn't hinted previously.
