I personally don't think the racism is exaggerated. The current timeline is the early 2000s (you can tell by their flip-phones) so people aren't as educated on racial sensitivity as they are now, although it still is problem in society.
And for example my dad got a corporate job in the early 2000s and he was the only asian on his floor (this is in toronto, canada btw similar to nyc) and he was discriminated daily things only changes after 10 years when HR started taking racial sensitivity seriously.
