I don't know if I should laugh or cry, so I just did both.
Like, there's someone saying rape is a crime, the character is a rapist and this work portrays an abusive relationship, using facts shown is the work itself, and then there are these fans critising them by saying "but he has a tragic past TM and even ApOloGizEd" like than means jackshit.
Imagining using that argument in real life "I know that I raped, beat and emotionally abused you but I'm sorry so... DTF?"
And I'm still trying to decide which are worse, the ones denying the abuse or the ones acknowledging it but trying to downplay it because ~character development~ and ~they're happy now~, like it's fine for an abuser to pursue a relationship with their victim.
it's 50 shades of grey all over again, for fuck's sake. I bet most of these crazed fans wouldn't be defending him so quickly if he wasn't good-looking and rich.

Again, rape is a crime, the character is a rapist and this work portrays an abusive relationship. THIS is NOT an opinion, it's a fact supported by the work in question so stop romanticising rape. Just because this is not the only work who does it, doesn't make it any more right. The fact that the author put a lot of work into this just makes me more disgusted, because it means they thought it was ok to go ahead and do it when they could have made a more healthy relationship, while also dealing with the character's past in a better way. Trauma doesn't give you the right to be a disgusting try at a human being.

PS: Before any of you come at me about ruining the webtoon, remember that the comment section is made for debating the work. So don't be a hypocrite just because you don't like what I have to say. I'm allowed to give my opinion, whether you like it or not.

You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, but you say this portrays an abusive relationship. If I had only read the first part of the story, then yes, I would have agreed with you. But don’t you think people change? Does Jiwon seem the same before and after realizing his mistake? I’m not saying you should forgive someone immediately, but maybe be more open to forgiveness.

Let's put it this way: if someone you cared about in real life were abused by their SO, would you still think that way? If they apologized would you let that someone continue a relationship with their abuser? I truly hope not.
The thing is, even if Jiwon realized his mistake and tried to change, it doesn't change the power imbalance in their relationship. Trauma is not something you can just overcome with an apology and fancy presents.
That way of thinking is what perpetuates the rape culture, both in fiction and IRL.
I don't know your gender, but as a woman, like most fans of yaoi are, I find the thought of forgiving and forgetting everything wrong the abuser did just because they look sorry -and let's be honesty, pretty - sickening.
And I don't mean this to personally attack you because, unfortunatelly, I thought like you one time and I get that sometimes you just want to focus on the good things, but this is an issue that should be adressed and corrected especially because of what Blue said. There are minors and more naive people that will read things like this and not be aware of just how problematic this genre can be and how it harms the lgbt community and victims of abuse.
