He's actually the reason why Touma was the way he was in the beginning of the story, like wtf???!!
But then if Touma wasn't dark, angsty and broody he might not have caught on Makoto's secret and they possibly wouldn't discover their "connection" to each other until much later or even never! Cuz Touma would have been a happy, healthy and stable teenager and not a rebellious and fucked up one that skips class and just an overall delinquent and so Touma wouldn't have been there when Makoto was writing an excuse letter for his swimming class.
