The ending is tragedy indeed, however, that was the at atonement for the wrongful acts he unconsciously committed.
The editor still love him, but chose to get married and live a normal life instead of pursuing their relationship. Gladly, he ended up with Kusumi, felt like his past wound is being healed with Kusumi by his side. At least he deserved this happiness after long suffering.

i just finished the novel. Really glad that they ended up together rather than partway as drama. I am really disappointed with the ending of the drama. What a sweet ending in the novel.
Correct me if I'm wrong but in the drama, Lan Zhan still went after Wei Ying in the end coz he called out his name while Wei Ying was playing his flute. Wei Ying then slowly turned around and smiles and while I'm convinced that Lan Zhan did went after him, that scene didn't particularly show Lan Zhan
After he played the flute, i did not see lan zhan followed him so i assume they partway.
exactly.. lan zhan wasn't shown on screen but he called out wei ying, which was why wei ying stopped playing the flute and turned around
i just watched that parting scene again and i can now confirm a hundred percent that Lan Zhan really did followed Wei Ying eventually. There must've been a time skip because Wei Ying was wearing different clothes when Lan Zhan called his name and he turned to give a relieved smile to the person who called him. Lan Zhan must've gone back and dealt with stuff before he decided to follow Wei Ying...
Yep, i rewatched it too and Lan Zhan did call out for him. Without reading the novel, i would not have known how deep their feelings are.
